Augustus Richard "Gus" Kenworthy (born October 1, 1991 in Chelmsford ) is an American freestyle skier and actor . He started for Great Britain in 2019 .

Career

Kenworthy has been participating in AFP World Tour competitions since 2008. He won his first victories in February 2010 at the Aspen / Snowmass Open in Aspen on the halfpipe and in slopestyle . At the 2010 Junior World Championships in Snow Park , he won silver in slopestyle. In the 2010/11 season he finished second on the halfpipe at the Winter Dew Tour in Killington (Vermont) and in slopestyle at the Dumont Cup in Newry . He reached third place in slopestyle at the Völkl NZ Freeski Open in Cardrona and at the AFP World Tour Final in Whistler . At the 2011 Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Park City , he came tenth in slopestyle. He finished the season in first place in the AFP World Tour overall standings. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he won the gold medal in halfpipe competition and in slopestyle at the New Zealand Winter Games in Cardrona . In the further course of the season he won on the halfpipe at the Pipe Open Series in Whistler , in slopestyle and on the halfpipe at the Aspen / Snowmass Open in Aspen , in slopestyle at the Dumont Cup in Newry and in big air at the Jon Olsson Invitational in Åre . Also in the season he finished second in slopestyle at the Austrian Freeski Open in Kaprun and in Big Air at the Nine Knights in Livigno . He won third place in the halfpipe competition at the New Zealand Freeski Open in Cardrona . He made his World Cup debut in December 2011 in Copper Mountain , which he finished in 18th place. At the end of the season he won in Slopestyle and Big Air at the AFP World Tour Finals in Whistler and thus achieved first place in the AFP World Tour overall ranking and in the Big Air ranking.

The following season Kenworthy won the Big Air at the US Grand Prix in Park City and on the halfpipe at the SFR Tour in Tignes . He reached second place in Big Air at the Relentless Freeze Festival in London , at the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge , at the World Cup race in Sochi and in slopestyle at the Dumont Cup in Newry . At the Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Voss , he achieved sixth place in Slopestyle. In March 2013 he won the bronze medal in slopestyle at the Winter X Games Europe in Tignes. At the AFP World Tour Final in Whistler , he won in slopestyle and took second place in the Big Air competition. As in the previous year, he finished the season in first place in the AFP World Tour overall ranking. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season he won the Halfpipe at the Pipe Open Series in Copper Mountain . In the further course of the season he took third place at the US Grand Prix in Copper Mountain and Park City . At his first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014, he won the silver medal in slopestyle. In March 2014 he won slopestyle at the Dumont Cup in Newry and finished second in the SFR Tour in La Clusaz . He finished the season in first place in the AFP World Tour overall standings for the fourth time in a row.

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Kenworthy won the Slopestyle at the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge . At the beginning of February 2015, he took third place on the halfpipe at the US Grand Prix in Mammoth . In the same month he won the Air & Style in Los Angeles and got his first World Cup victory in Park City . In the Halfpipe World Cup he came in second place. In the 2015/16 season he won slopestyle at the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge and the halfpipe at the US Grand Prix and FIS World Cup in Mammoth . At the Winter X Games 2016 in Aspen , he won silver on the superpipe and in slopestyle. In February 2016 he won the bronze medal at the X-Games Oslo 2016 in Oslo on the halfpipe and in the big air competition. In the following season he took second place in the halfpipe at the US Grand Prix and FIS World Cup in Mammoth and third place in slopestyle at the World Cup in Silvaplana . At the Winter X Games 2017 , he came tenth in both slopestyle and halfpipe. In March 2017 he finished ninth in Big Air and seventh in slopestyle at the X-Games Norway 2017 in Hafjell and won the silver medal in slopestyle at the Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Sierra Nevada . He also came in tenth in the halfpipe there. In the same month he achieved second place in the slopestyle at the Spring Battle in Flachauwinkl .

Kenworthy has guested as himself on The Real O'Neals and RuPaul's Drag Race, and also plays Emma Roberts' friend in season 9 of American Horror Story .

Personal

Kenworthy is the youngest son of Pip Kenworthy, née Tyler, of Bristol , England, and Peter Kenworthy, of Philadelphia , and was born in Chelmsford, Essex, England. His older brothers are Hugh and Nick Kenworthy. At the age of two, the family moved to Telluride , Colorado , where Kenworthy graduated from high school in 2010.

In October 2015, Kenworthy came out as gay in an interview with the US sports broadcaster ESPN as the first active extreme athlete . Before coming out, he dated Robin Macdonald, a skiing photographer, for five years. During the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Russia , the couple gained international fame when they adopted five stray dogs they found at Krasnaya Polyana and brought them to the United States.

From November 2015 to July 2019, Kenworthy and American actor Matthew Wilkas were a couple.
