Gustav Beer

Gustav Beer , also Gustave Beer and GW Wheatley (born June 16, 1888 in Vienna , † July 26, 1983 in Nyack , New York ) was an Austrian - American writer and librettist .

Life

Gustav Beer studied in Vienna and worked primarily as a librettist for operettas in Berlin and Vienna. He worked with well-known composers such as Edmund Eysler , Eduard Künneke , Robert Stolz , Oscar Straus and librettists such as Julius Brammer and Ernst Marischka .

After the “Anschluss” of Austria he had to emigrate and in 1939 came to the United States via the Netherlands and Great Britain, where he continued to work as a writer in New York City . Together with Emmerich Kálmán he founded the "American League of Authors and Composers from Austria including Publishers" and was committed to helping Austrian emigrants.
