Nyack [ naɪæk ] is a village ( Village ) in Rockland County of New York . At the 2010 census , Nyack had 6,765 inhabitants.

geography

Nyack extends over areas of the cities of Orangetown and Clarkstown . It's on the west bank of the Hudson River , right across from Tarrytown .

Nyack is one of five Villages and Hamlets (Nyack, Central Nyack, South Nyack, South Nyack, Upper Nyack, and West Nyack) located in southeastern Rockland County and collectively called The Nyacks .

history

Nyack was originally from Nyack Indians called Indians settled. The name of the place is derived from them.

Stone remains of the Indian colonization and many oyster shells that were found on the banks of the Hudson indicate that this was a popular fishing spot for the local population.

In 1675 the first whites settled in Rockland County near Nyack. Nyack was officially founded as a Village in 1782.

The three main industries were once the extraction of sand stone building in New York City (about 1800-1840), boat building - sloops, steamboats and later pleasure boats and submarine hunters for the First and Second World War (about 1815-1948) and Shoe manufacture (around 1828–1900).

Until its closure in the second half of the 20th century, the West Shore Railroad connected Nyack with Weehawken , from where ferries ran to New York City. After the completion of the Tappan Zee Bridge over the Hudson River in 1955, there was a sharp increase in population.

In the 1980s, the place started a revitalization project to revitalize the city center and expand the economy. At that time, the Helen Hayes Theater was built and many new shops opened up in the city center.

Culture and sights

  • Edward Hopper House Art Center - home of the painter Edward Hopper , built in 1858. One room is dedicated to Hopper's work and life in Nyack. Three more rooms offer space for monthly exhibitions by local artists. The garden is the scene of jazz concerts.
  • John Green House - built in 1817 by John Green from sandstone extracted on site. Now plastered and painted yellow. The oldest house in Nyack. Green opened the first sawmill in Nyack and later a shop. The building is a private residential building.
  • Nyack Library - large collection of photographs and printed matter from the history of Nyack.
  • Oak Hill Cemetery - cemetery since 1840 until today, dedicated on June 27, 1848, reflects the change from a small family cemetery and religious cemetery to a community cemetery. Here are the graves of the founder Nyacks, the playwright Charles MacArthur and his wife, the actress Helen Hayes, the scientist and inventor William Hand and the painter Edward Hopper.
  • Red Cross Center - a characteristic building in Queen Anne style , built in 1882 by Julia and Garret Blauvelt, a physicist, surgeon and director of Nyack Hospital, handed over to the Red Cross in 1915. During the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, the center was the hub for the distribution of food, blood donations, clothing collections and supplies for overseas shipping. Helen Hayes , who lived nearby, was the chairman of the War Fund fundraiser during World War II. Camp Shanks, one of the military bases during the war, relied on the services and volunteers of the Red Cross. Today the center continues to provide clothing, food and shelter in case of emergencies. In addition, since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the center has been offering courses in first aid and lifesaving.
  • River Rowing Association (RRA) - In 1881 Julian O. Davidson, a local artist and painter, founded the Nyack Rowing Association (NRA), a sculling rowing technique. The large boathouse, built in 1882, was designed by William Smith and built in the stick style found on many houses along the river. Today the RRA is planning a permanent community rowing and paddling center in Nyack, where people from all walks of life can enjoy access to the Hudson River.
  • US Post Office Nyack - The neoclassical building, built in 1932 , is one of the few examples where this style was used for a post office in the interwar period .
