Gustav Reiner

Gustav "Gustl" Reiner (born June 13, 1953 ; † November 24, 2007 in Bietigheim-Bissingen ) was a German motorcycle racer .

Reiner was known as "Kamikaze-Gustl" because of his daring driving style and numerous falls and was therefore also a favorite with the public. In 1979, 1986 and 1987 he was German motorcycle champion in the 500 cm³ class.

Gustav Reiner died of heart failure on November 24, 2007 , after an artificial hip joint that was used in the summer had been removed due to an inflammation .

Career

Gustav Reiner, a trained concrete worker , competed in the German motorcycle championship for many years, and between 1979 and 1988 he also took part sporadically in the motorcycle world championship as a privateer.

He achieved his best placement at the Grand Prix of Czechoslovakia in Brno in 1981 , when he finished third behind the eventual world champion Toni Mang and the French Jean-François Baldé on his Bimota - Yamaha in the 350 cm³ race. Reiner achieved his best world championship placement in 1982 in the 350cc class when he finished tenth with 19 points.

Gustav Reiner also caused a sensation in the half-liter class on a privately entered Suzuki . In 1979 he was fourth in the wet race at Spa-Francorchamps , and sixth at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez in 1984 .
