The 1979 motorcycle world championship season was the 31st in the history of the FIM - motorcycle road world championship .

In the classes up to 500 cm³ and up to 250 cm³ there were twelve, in the class up to 350 cm³ eleven, in the class up to 125 cm³ 13, in the class up to 50 cm³ and in the sidecar category B2A seven and in the sidecar category B2B six races held.
