Career

Lucchinelli began his career in 1975 on a Laverda in endurance races. His performance there earned him a factory sponsored Yamaha for the Italian championship . For the 1976 season he got into the 500 cc World Championship on Suzuki and took fourth place overall with three podium places. His wild riding style earned him the nickname Crazy Horse and led to numerous falls that made him fall back to eleventh place in the World Championship in 1977 with a Yamaha.

Lucchinelli returned to Suzuki in 1978 . He won his first race on this brand at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in 1980 and was behind Kenny Roberts sr. and Randy Mamola finished third overall. In the 1981 season he won five races and won the world title in a close battle against Mamola. In the same year he also won the Imola 200-mile race , which he won for the second time in 1986.

Two years at Honda and two more on a Cagiva were less successful. At the end of the 1985 season, Lucchinelli temporarily ended his active career.

In the 1988 season Lucchinelli returned for one season and rode on Ducati in the newly founded Superbike World Championship , where he won two races and finished fifth. After the season he took over the post of Ducati team manager.
