Marc Márquez Alentà (born February 17, 1993 in Cervera ) is a Spanish motorcycle racer . He is eight-time world champion of the FIM - Motorcycle Road World Championship .

Career

Early years

Marc Márquez began his racing career in motocross and minibike at the age of six . He later switched to road racing. After several appearances in the 125-cc class of the Spanish Championship , which he finished with the eighth overall in 2007, he could Alberto Puig draw attention to themselves, of him together with Esteve Rabat for 2008 for Repsol KTM in the eighth-liter class of motorcycle World Championship under contract.

Marc Márquez 2010 in Assen

125 cc World Championship

In 2008 Márquez competed in the 125 cc class of the motorcycle world championship. The season started later for Marquez due to an injury and it ended prematurely due to a training crash at the Malaysian Grand Prix . He sustained injuries to the cartilage around his shin . By the end of the season, Marquez had a podium finish and some top ten results on his credit side. He landed 13th overall with 63 points. His compatriot and team mate Esteve Rabat was one place behind with 49 points.

In his second season , Marc Márquez achieved a podium finish with the Red Bull 125cc KTM team by finishing third at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez . For this he drove out nine top ten places and was able to reach eighth place in the overall standings, which meant an increase of five places compared to the previous year. This gave Márquez his teammate, the American Cameron Beaubier , who finished 29th, clearly under control. Because of the exit of KTM from the world championship at the end of 2009, Márquez moved to the Finnish team Ajo Motorsport.

The 2010 season began Marc Marquez with a new team and a Derbi at the side of Sandro Cortese as teammates and a third place at the Grand Prix of Qatar . After a failure in the second race of the season, his home game in Jerez, and third place in France , he fell a little behind Nicolás Terol and Pol Espargaró in the World Cup . He then converted this deficit with his first ever victory in the motorcycle world championship at the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello and four more immediately afterwards up to the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring , where Terol could not start due to injury and Espargaró was eliminated. into a 26-point lead over Espargaró after eight races. At the Czech Grand Prix in Brno , Márquez took seventh place with a dislocated shoulder, which reduced his lead in the World Championship to 15 points. At the next race in Indianapolis , he finished tenth because of a fall and a 20-second time penalty for shortening a chicane. At the end of the year, Márquez was world champion in the 125 cc class ahead of Terol and Espargaró. At 17 years and 263 days he is the second youngest 125 cm³ world champion in the history of the motorcycle world championship after Loris Capirossi .

Marquez 2011 on Suter

Moto2 class

For the 2011 season Marc Márquez was promoted to the Moto2 class and drove a Suter for the Catalunya Caixa Repsol team . After the first three races without any World Championship points, he was already 82 points behind World Championship leader Stefan Bradl after round six, the Great Britain Grand Prix in Silverstone . With series victories in the Dutch Assen , the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello, the Sachsenring and the Indianapolis Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway , San Marino in Misano and Aragon in Motorland Aragón , he reduced the gap to six championship points and took over second place at the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi with one point ahead of the championship lead over Bradl. Relegated to the last place on the grid due to a training accident at the Australian Grand Prix in Phillip Island , which he was responsible for, Márquez lost the lead again to Stefan Bradl, who finished second, despite being third. Due to an injury, he could not compete in the last two races in Sepang and Valencia and lost the world title to Stefan Bradl without a fight.

In 2012 Marc Márquez - still in the Repsol team on Suter material - was able to win the first race immediately despite the injury he had sustained the year before. He dominated the entire season. At the end of the season he had nine wins, two second and three third places, with two starting positions from last place on the grid. He was able to secure the world championship title early in Australia, after the last race, the Valencia Grand Prix , he finally had a lead of 56 points in the overall standings over second-placed Pol Espargaró. His superb performances in the Moto2 class made Márquez for the Repsol Honda - Factory Team in the MotoGP interesting class. Honda therefore campaigned against the rookie rule, which said that a newcomer to the premier class was not allowed to receive factory material in his first season. The rule was eventually abolished and Márquez signed a two-year contract with the Japanese factory team , where he replaced Australian Casey Stoner .

Marquez 2013 on Honda

MotoGP class

At the opening race of the 2013 season in Qatar, Márquez finished third behind reigning world champions Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi (both Yamaha ). After pole position and victory in Texas , which made him the youngest Moto GP winner in history, he finished second in Jerez. In the fourth race, the French Grand Prix at the Bugatti Circuit , Márquez took pole again and finished third. In the following Italian Grand Prix, in which he already had a fall at 338 km / h in training, he was also out of the race. At his home Grand Prix in Spain, Márquez finished third. At the Dutch TT he finished second behind Rossi. At the Sachsenring he took pole position and victory again. This was followed by another victory in front of Stefan Bradl at the US Grand Prix in Laguna Seca . With his fourth win in Indianapolis and the fifth in Brno in the Czech Republic, Márquez extended his lead in the world championship. In Australia, Márquez had to score zero points, as the high temperatures caused the tires to suffer from excessive wear and tear, which resulted in a flag-to-flag race taking place for the first time. The regulations stipulated that the motorcycle should be changed within the ninth or tenth lap. This rule was misinterpreted by the team, as a result of which Márquez only pitted on the eleventh lap. On November 10th, he finished third in Valencia behind Jorge Lorenzo and his teammate Dani Pedrosa . Thus Marc Márquez won the overall and was 20 years and 266 days the youngest world champion in the since 1949 existing premier class of motorcycle racing . Marquez broke the record set by Freddie Spencer , who was 21 years and 258 days old, when he won the 500cc title on a Honda in 1983 . He also became the first rookie since 1978 to win the premier class title.

In the 2014 season, Marc Márquez drove again for Repsol Honda . Dani Pedrosa was still his teammate. The start of this season was again very successful for Márquez. He took pole position in the first six races and won the first ten races of the current year in a row. Mick Doohan last achieved this feat in the 1997 season . With second place at the Japanese Grand Prix at the Twin Ring Motegi , Márquez was able to win his second MotoGP world title in a row and thus celebrate his fourth title in the entire motorcycle world championship. At the same time, he is still the youngest rider (21 years and 237 days) to win two titles in a row in the top class of the motorcycle world championship. Marquez replaced Mike Hailwood in this ranking . At the time, he was 23 years and 152 days old. In qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, Márquez secured another record with the 13th pole position of the season. At the last race in Valencia he scored his 13th win of the season. Marc Márquez beat Mick Doohan's record from 1997 .

Marc Márquez also competed alongside Dani Pedrosa on the Repsol Honda team in 2015 . The start of his third MotoGP season was not as successful as before. After the first seven races, Márquez was able to take a victory and a second place. However, there were also three failures. From the Dutch TT in Assen, he used the chassis of the 2014 racing motorcycle. Since then, he has achieved two second places and four wins in the last nine races. Between the Grand Prix of Aragon and Japan, Márquez fell while mountain biking in his hometown of Cervera. He broke the fifth metacarpal bone of his left hand . Nevertheless, he drove the race in Japan and finished fourth there. In the following race in Australia, Márquez took first place, his 50th Grand Prix victory. At 22 years and 243 days, he is the youngest driver to have made it. At the end of the season he finished third in the overall standings behind world champions Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi.

Márquez remained loyal to the Repsol Honda team in the 2016 season . Dani Pedrosa was also his teammate there again. After the first half of the season, Márquez was at the top of the World Cup with 170 points. He achieved eight podium positions in nine races. Including three wins. In the third free practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix , he suffered a shoulder dislocation after a fall . In the race on the following Sunday, Márquez finished fifth. With his victory at the Japanese Grand Prix, three races before the end of the season, Marquez became world champion in the MotoGP class for the third time.

In his fifth year in the premier class , the driver pairing in the Honda works team was again Márquez / Pedrosa. It was the worst start to a new MotoGP season for Márquez so far. After the first two races he was eighth overall. At the third race of the season in Texas , he achieved his first win of the year. It was the fifth in a row for Marc Márquez on this track. He is also unbeaten on American soil since his victory in the Moto2 class at the Indianapolis Grand Prix in the 2012 season . Before the last race in Valencia, Marc Márquez was 21 points ahead of Andrea Dovizioso , who was second in the championship standings. A third place in the race was enough for the Spaniard to defend his title and become world champion in the MotoGP class for the fourth time.

In his sixth year in the premier class , Márquez was able to defend the title again. He started the season with a second place in Qatar, after 18th place in Argentina he was first in fifth place in the overall standings. But won the next three races in a row. Among other things, Márquez won in Texas for the sixth time in a row and continued to build his perfect record there. From the Spanish Grand Prix he took over the overall lead and did not give it up until the end. After finishing second in Catalonia , Márquez was always on the podium until the end of the season when he crossed the finish line. He set another record at the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring, winning the race across all classes for the ninth time in a row since 2010. With a win in Japan he was the third time in a row and for the fifth time in total in the MotoGP class world champion through the failure of Andrea Dovizioso in an attempted overtaking maneuver against Márquez. In the end he was 76 points ahead of World Cup runner-up Dovizioso with 321 points.

In the 2019 season he was able to become world champion in the MotoGP class for the fourth time in a row, it was the sixth title in the premier class and the eighth world title overall. He started the season with a second place in Qatar and won the next race in Argentina . In the subsequent race in Texas he crashed after six wins in a row on this track. It should be the only time until the end of the season that Márquez did not finish a race in the first two places. After his victory in Spain , he took the lead in the world championship until the end of the season. He has won the German Grand Prix for the tenth time in a row since 2010. In Brno , he took his 50th victory in his 118th race in the MotoGP class. From the San Marino Grand Prix to the Australian race, he won five races in a row. He won the world championship after a narrow victory in the last round against Fabio Quartararo at the Grand Prix of Thailand . His 80th career success was the race in Japan . He was on the podium 18 times in 19 races, setting a new record; he always reached the podium in the last 16 races of the season. Another record was the 420 points scored at the end of the year. During the season he had a total of twelve wins, ten pole positions and twelve fastest race laps and was 163 points ahead of Andrea Dovizioso.

After a fall in the first race of 2020 in Jerez and an operation on his right upper arm, he wanted to start again the next weekend, but decided not to do so after problems in qualifying. After another operation, he did not take part in the race in Brno (Czech Grand Prix).
