Career

Dario Ambrosini started motorcycle racing before the Second World War . In 1939 he was able to win a 250 cc Benelli race in Verona , Rome , Terni and Spoleto . In 1940 Ambrosini switched to Moto Guzzi , Benelli's biggest rival in the 250cc class, and competed for the manufacturer from Mandello del Lario up to and including 1947. In 1947 he won the Italian 250 cc championship title on Moto Guzzi . In 1948 Dario Ambrosini switched back to Benelli and won , among other things, the Swiss Grand Prix with the 250 cc single-cylinder machine that was built before the World War .

From the motorcycle world championship in 1949 Dario Ambrosini started for Benelli in the 250 cm³ class of the newly created motorcycle world championship. His machine turned out to be not very competitive against the Moto Guzzis, but he was able to record his first victory at the last World Championship round in Monza and finish the World Championship in second behind Bruno Ruffo .

The 1950 season was more successful for Dario Ambrosini. He achieved three wins in the four World Championship races, including the Tourist Trophy and a second place. With 30 points, he was the superior 250cc world champion and had more than twice as many points in the final standings than runner-up Maurice Cann from Great Britain , who had 14 points.

In 1951 Ambrosini won the first 250cc World Championship in Bremgarten and came second in the TT. At the following French Grand Prix in Albi , he started with a new version of the 250cc Benelli, which was now equipped with a telescopic fork . During a training run at 180 km / h while approaching a fast bend, he got a defect on the front tire. Ambrosini managed to keep his motorcycle under control for about 40 meters, but then got off the track and crashed into the track barrier. He was thrown from the machine and sustained severe head injuries when he hit an iron fence post. Gianni Leoni , who was the first to pass the scene of the accident, stopped immediately, but could no longer help his compatriot. Dario Ambrosini died a short time later on the way to hospital and became the first world champion in the history of the motorcycle world championship to be killed in an accident. Leoni was also killed just a month later in a tragic accident during training for the Ulster Grand Prix .
