1971 season>

The 1970 motorcycle world championship season was the 22nd in the history of the FIM - motorcycle road world championship .

In the classes up to 500 cm³ and up to 125 cm³ eleven races were held , in the classes up to 350 cm³ and up to 50 cm³ ten, in the class up to 250 cm³ twelve and in the sidecar eight races.

  • The number of rated runs was calculated with an even number of races held by halving this number and then adding one. For example, out of six races, four went into the championship ranking.
  • If an odd number of races was held, the number of runs was added by one and then halved. For example, four of the seven races counted.

Rule changes

For the 1970 season, the FIM made the following changes to the technical regulations:

  • the maximum number of cylinders for the 125 and 250 cm³ class was limited from four to two, which quickly led to the four-stroke engine disappearing from these classes
  • for all classes which was gearbox to a maximum of six transitions limited

Deaths

  • A total of seven drivers were killed in the 1970 World Cup races. The most prominent victim was the Spaniard Santiago Herrero , who fell on June 8, 1970 as world championship leader in the 250 cc class in the lightweight TT race (250 cc class) and succumbed to his injuries two days later.
