Gustav Schadeloock (born July 27, 1732 in Stettin ; † May 2, 1819 in Rostock ) was a German mathematician, philosopher, physicist and architect.

Life

Gustav Schadeloock was the son of the Szczecin First City Secretary Gustav Schadeloock († 1732) and his wife Christina Hedwig, b. Becker (1706-1768). The mother came from the Rostock family of scholars Becker and was the youngest daughter of Heinrich Becker (1662-1720), pastor at the Rostock Jakobikirche . After the early death of the father, the mother returned to the family in Rostock. Here Schadeloock was first educated by private teachers and then came to the cathedral school in Schwerin. He also received instruction in mathematics, mechanics and architecture from his great-uncle Peter Becker , theologian and professor of mathematics at the University of Rostock , in whose household he lived.

Schadeloock studied philosophy, mathematics and law at the University of Rostock from Easter 1750. His teachers were u. a. the brothers Angelius Aepinus and Franz Aepinus , Hermann Becker and Joh. Eschenbach . From 1754 he worked as an informator and tutor for a few years, but had to give up this activity due to illness. Back in Rostock, he was accepted into the house of his uncle, the deacon at the Nikolaikirche and professor of theology Heinrich Becker . In 1765 he was given permission to give lectures on logic and mathematics as a private lecturer. In addition, he trained intensively in the field of architecture and worked as a geometer. At the University of Greifswald he received his master's degree in 1774 .

In 1778 the city council of Rostock appointed him full professor of physics and metaphysics at the philosophy faculty. He thus succeeded Joachim Hartmann . From 1789 to 1798 he was an advisory professor of metaphysics, in which position he was succeeded by Jacob Sigismund Beck . Finally, in 1798, he was appointed councilor professor of astronomy and lower mathematics ( arithmetic and geometry ). He took over this professorship from Heinrich Valentin Becker and held it until his death. His successor was Hans Rudolf Schröter . Schadeloock was dean of the Faculty of Philosophy several times, member of the inner council in 1795/96 and 1798/99 and rector of the university in 1785 and 1796/97 . Gustav Schadeloock died after a serious illness as a senior at the university at the age of 86. He bequeathed 100 thalers to the Rostock University Library to purchase books and several valuable books from his own library.

Schadeloock also gave lectures on architecture, such as fortification , artillery and civil architecture. In his book Laudem architecturae civiles breviter enarrat… - a praise to the art of architecture - published in 1765, Schadeloock himself calls architecture his favorite art and places it among others. a. also on moral grounds over the other arts such as sculpture, painting, music and poetry. Between 1770 and 1806, Schadeloock's work had a decisive influence on the Rostock construction process. According to his drafts from 1774, the monk's gate , which still exists today, was built in 1805/06 . From 1781 to 1783 he built the new altar of the Jakobikirche and also equipped the church with lightning rods. He had road embankments built and built gates of honor for princely receptions. He was also involved in the planning for the new theater in 1785/86 . After his death, the city council demanded that his successor as a professor of mathematics also have practical building knowledge!
