The Gutenberg Marathon is a marathon in Mainz that has been taking place on the second Sunday in May since 2000.

organization

The run was launched for the 600th birthday of Johannes Gutenberg from the Office for Public Relations of the City of Mainz. From 2001 the organization was handed over to the sports department. The sporting host is USC Mainz . The program also includes a half marathon and a race for hand bikers ; As Ekiden there has been a half marathon competition for school relays since 2006 and a relay marathon in a team of two since 2009 , in which the ChampionChip used for timing is handed over at the half marathon mark . Due to the great demand and limited capacity of the event, the starting places are usually booked out months before the event.

So far, the German Marathon Championships have been held four times as part of the Gutenberg Marathon. In 2007, Ilona Pfeiffer as overall winner and Philipp Büttner as fifth overall German champion, in 2008 Susanne Hahn as overall winner and Martin Beckmann as third overall, in 2009 Bernadette Pichlmaier as overall winner and Stefan Koch as fifth overall. In 2010 Pichlmaier defended her title as fourth overall, while Dennis Pyka prevailed as seventh overall among the men.

Between December 2008 and 2012 the official name was "Novo Nordisk Gutenberg Marathon" after the main sponsor Novo Nordisk .

In 2016, the race was not held until May 22nd, as the Rheingoldhalle was not available for the actual date on the second Sunday in May. The times were significantly higher than in previous years, because the Mainz organizers had not invited any Africans for the first time.

The 18th Gutenberg Marathon was held on May 7, 2017, and the 2018 Gutenberg Marathon on May 6.

Route

The route measured according to the guidelines of the German Athletics Association (DLV) consists of two partially identical laps.

The start and finish is on Rheinstrasse between the town hall and the Rheingoldhalle . First you go down the Rhine past the Electoral Palace on Rheinallee and from there until 2013 over the Schott AG premises , since 2014 people have turned left in front of the tram depot and walked on the Kaiser-Karl-Ring over Hattenbergplatz and right into Hattenbergstrasse the Mainz Gleisdreieck through Mombach , where the northernmost point of the route is reached. After crossing Mombach again, it goes past the children's neurological center and the old locomotive hall between Hartenbergpark and the railway area to the underpass at the Rheingauwall . You now walk in a loop through Neustadt to Kaiserstraße . Since 2014 there have been some changes to the route through the Neustadt. After going around the Christ Church , partly against the normal direction of travel, it goes through the Bauhofstraße and the Große Bleiche into the old town . Via Gutenbergplatz and past the cathedral to the right, the route leads through Augustinergasse to Rheinstrasse and on Wormser Strasse past the city park to Weisenau . Shortly before the end of the first round, you will pass the Museum of Ancient Shipping and the wooden tower .

In the second lap, the Rhine is first crossed on the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke , followed by a loop through Mainz-Kastel and -Kostheim . The end of the 2/3 marathon has been at the Reduit in Mainz-Kastel since 2014; The 2/3 participants leave the high roundabout on the Heuss bridge, walk down the ramp in the opposite direction of travel towards Amöneburg, turn left to the Rhine, cross under the Heuss bridge and walk to the 2/3 destination at the Reduit in Mainz -Kastel a. Cross the Heuss Bridge back to the left bank of the Rhine, where the finish line of the 2/3 marathon was until 2013. The rest of the marathon route is similar to the first lap. Since 2014 there have been some changes to the route in the second round. In Mombach, Industriestrasse is left out and only a small loop is run. After leaving the Große Bleiche, the runners turn left into the pedestrian zone and get back to the previous running route via Gymnasiumstraße. In the second round the loop to Weisenau is skipped.

In 2014 the route was changed in parts to give the runners an incentive. The multiple turns, e.g. B. in the Neustadt and in the pedestrian zone should motivate the runners, since long straight stretches are rather "sobering". The route through the pedestrian zone should bring the spectators closer to the runners.

The course is flat with about 20 meters between the lowest and highest point. The start and finish area between the town hall and the Rheingoldhalle is 85.6 m above sea level , the lowest point is in the Mombach district at 80.91 m above sea level, the highest point is at 100.25 m above sea level the Theodor Heuss Bridge. Except for a few cobblestone passages in the pedestrian zone of the old town, the route is paved throughout. Numerous spectators line the route and create the carnival atmosphere typical of the city .

Marathon participants who only reach the half marathon mark after 2:45 hours after the first lap must finish the run as a half marathon participant. The finish line closes at 3 p.m.
