The HSG Konstanz ( handball community Konstanz ) is the handball department of the sports club TV Konstanz , which competed under its own name and was founded in 1923 .

Until June 30, 2015, it was a game community founded in 1980 for the handball departments of the two Konstanz clubs TV and HC DJK Konstanz.

The first men's team of the HSG has played consistently at least in the third highest division of German handball since the mid-1990s , at the beginning of the 21st century they played three seasons in a row in what was then the southern season of the 2nd Bundesliga . The years after that she was one of the top clubs in the southern season of the third division . After winning the South German Championship in 2015/16 and 2018/19, she rose again to the now single-track 2nd Bundesliga.

First men's team

The first men's team of the HSG was initially successful after the merger of the two clubs: In the 1982/83 season they were promoted from the association league to the South Baden Oberliga, and in the following season they were promoted to the then third-highest division, the regional handball league . After repeated relegation and promotion, the HSG has been able to firmly establish itself in the third-highest division since the 1994/95 season.

In the 2000/01 season , promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga was the greatest success in the club's history to date, after HSG Konstanz had failed in the promotion games to the second division a year earlier despite the regional league championship. The HSG was able to hold out there for three seasons; since the 2004/05 season Konstanz played again in the third highest division, the regional league and the new 3rd league south (since 2010). In the 2015/16 season , the HSG became champions of the 3rd League South and was thus able to secure promotion to the now single-track 2nd Bundesliga for the second time in the 2016/17 season . There they managed to stay in the league with 35:41 points and 14th place.

Daniel Eblen has been the trainer since the beginning of 2004, making him the longest-serving German professional handball coach.

In the 2017/18 season , the team finished 19th in the 2nd handball Bundesliga and was relegated to the 3rd division.

In the 2018/19 season , the HSG became champions of the 3rd League South and thus won the South German Championship. In the subsequent promotion relegation she was able to prevail in the second round against HC Empor Rostock (31:31 and 33:29) and secure a direct promotion back to the 2nd Bundesliga.

Venue: Schänzle Sports Hall Konstanz

The venue for the first men's team is the Schänzle sports hall in Constance, which can accommodate a total of 1900 spectators (1417 seats) and is located directly on the Seerhein . The Dreifelderhalle built in the Paradies district is the largest sports hall in the city of Konstanz and has an outdoor athletics facility with two grass fields, a beach area and an additional, separate hall for basketball and volleyball. A public restaurant offers a direct view of the Seerhein from the spacious terrace.

In 2005 and 2007, the German national handball team of the DHB held a test match against Switzerland in a sold-out hall.

Over the past few years, the average attendance at the HSG Konstanz in the Schänzle sports hall has increased steadily; in the 2015/16 season, an average of more than 1,000 fans attended the home games. As in previous years, this was the best value in the 3rd League South. One year later, the average number of spectators in the 2nd Bundesliga increased significantly to 1,300 fans per home game. A total of 24,250 spectators at the home games of the HSG meant the best value of a climber and ranked eleventh in the league in the 2016/17 season.

The Schänzle sports hall is also known by the nickname "Schänzle-Hölle" because of the loud fans.

Cooperations

There are collaborations with the University of Konstanz and the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz (HTWG) to promote top-class sport . Scholarships can be awarded to talented, motivated handball players. The expanded second division squad comprises 22 players - with a few exceptions, all of them study at the two universities in Konstanz.

Promotion of talent and youth work

The HSG Konstanz has set itself the task of promoting young talent. In addition to the very young second division team, the second team also stands for this. She is currently playing her fourth season in the fourth-class Oberliga Baden-Württemberg after being promoted again in 2018 . In the 2018/19 season, the youngest team in the league almost made it through to the third division.

The HSG is also characterized by very successful youth work, especially in the male area. The teams play consistently in the highest divisions and have a large number of successes to show. This includes South Baden and South German championships. There were also successes at the national level, such as the German runner-up in 1998 with the male B youth. The male A-youth qualified for the first season of the DHB youth league in 2011/12, making them one of the founding members of the elite class of German youth handball. With a total of eight participations, including seven in a row since the 2013/14 season, HSG Konstanz is one of the most successful clubs in southern Germany in the youth Bundesliga.
