The handball club Erlangen eV (short: handball club Erlangen , HC Erlangen or HCE ) is a German handball club from Erlangen in the metropolitan region of Nuremberg . It was created in 2001 from the merger of the handball departments of CSG and HG Erlangen .

history

Middle Franconia was already a stronghold in large field handball in the 1950s and 1960s. The two Erlanger clubs TV48 and from TB 88 played in the Bavarian top. In 1970 the Gymnastics Federation moved into the final of the southern German championship.

In June 1983 the handball departments of TV 48 Erlangen and TB 88 Erlangen merged to form HG Erlangen. The aim of this amalgamation was to bundle the finances and to reach the second handball league. The B-youth of the CSG won the German youth championship title and a year later with the youth A the championship title. In 1989 the CSG rose to the second Bundesliga South. The HG followed seven years later.

Until the early 2000s, both clubs played in the second-highest division, until major financial problems arose. In 2001 an attempt was made to save handball by merging HG and CSG to form today's HC Erlangen. Initially, this was neither sporty nor economical. It was not until 2008 that later national players like Weinhold and Szücs succeeded in returning to the 2nd Bundesliga. The legacy, however, brought the financial problems back to life.

In autumn 2010, shortly before the bankruptcy, a group of business people led by Erlangen attorney Carsten Bissel took over the management of HC Erlangen. In 2014 the club rose to the first division and moved to the Nürnberger Versicherung arena. In 2015 the club was relegated, but the direct resurgence followed. With 9th place in the 2016/17 season, HC Erlangen is the best-placed climber of the last decade. In the 2019/20 season, an average of 5,033 spectators saw the home games of HC Erlangen in the Nürnberger Versicherung arena. This is seventh in the table in the LIQUI MOLI handball Bundesliga audience ranking.

The U23 team rose to the third-highest division in the 2016/17 season and thus forms the foundation for the professional area. The male A-youth has definitely qualified for the Bundesliga again. All other teams play in the highest Bavarian age group.
