Handball coach in Germany
The imparting of handball-specific knowledge is based on the DHB framework training concept. In addition, the trainers and trainers are expected or imparted knowledge and skills in the area of social skills in order to do justice to the educational responsibility and role model function towards children, adolescents and adults.
The trainer training at the German Handball Federation (DHB) is divided into five levels with the corresponding licenses and follows the framework guidelines of the German Olympic Sports Federation for training and further education:
- Qualified instructor license handball (F license) in the field of popular and recreational sports
- C trainer license
- B trainer license
- A trainer license
- Certified trainer license
In order to obtain a trainer license, it is assumed that the applicant for this license already has the next lower license. In addition, the applicant must have been primarily responsible for exercising or coaching a handball team for at least two years.
The exams and the requirements for admission to the respective exam are regulated by an overall training plan of the DHB. This training plan is in turn based on the framework guidelines of the German Olympic Sports Confederation .
Only those who are members of a club that belongs to an association affiliated to the German Handball Federation are allowed to act as trainers or trainers.
Technical trainer license
The technical trainer license is granted for a period of four years. The license can be extended by four years if the applicant has been the main instructor of a team for at least two years and has participated in a recognized training event.
The C license
The C license is mainly intended for voluntary youth trainers in basic training and for club trainers in the lower performance range. The requirements for acquiring a C license can differ slightly from one regional association to another. In most cases, you must be over 18 years of age ( majority ), proof of having attended the referee (novice) course and a 16-hour first aid course . In the Handball Association of Württemberg (HVW), the acquisition of the C license is divided into three course measures:
- a one-week basic course
- a one-week advanced course
- a five-day final course with examination
In principle, the DOSB stipulates the duration of training to obtain the C license at 120 hours. Of these 120 hours, 30 hours must be filled with generic content. In the Handball Association of Lower Saxony (HVN), the training is offered in six weekend modules, plus a separate exam date.
The C-Trainer license is also granted for a period of four years and can be extended by four years if the applicant has been the main instructor of a team for at least two years and has taken part in a recognized training event with at least 15 learning units.
The B license
The B license is intended for youth coaches in advanced training and club coaches in the medium performance range. The activity as a trainer can be part-time. In the state association of Württemberg, the following requirements apply to the acquisition of this license:
- the completion of the 21st year of life
- membership in a club of the German Sports Confederation
- the possession of a valid C-Trainer license
- Proof of two years of activity as a trainer in a club after obtaining the C license
- sufficient German language skills
The B-Trainer license is valid for three years. It can be extended by three years at a time if the applicant has been the main coach of a team for at least two years and has taken part in a recognized training event with at least 15 learning units.
The A license
The highest level within the German Handball Federation is the A-Trainer license. Trainers with this license work as youth trainers in performance training and talent development as well as club trainers in the higher performance area. The training for an A-trainer training course is subject to the German Handball Federation. The training is therefore nationwide. The DHB has the following requirements for acquiring an A license:
- the completion of the 25th year of life
- membership in a club of the German Sports Confederation
- possession of a valid B-trainer license
- Proof of several years of activity as a responsible trainer with a B-trainer license, including at least two years in the top division (men and women) of a regional association or a higher division
- sufficient written and spoken German language skills
The training lasts ten months and is divided into three areas:
- a two-week internship with a Bundesliga club (1st or 2nd league, men or women)
- two basic courses and one project course
- the A license exam
An A-trainer license is granted for a period of two years. It can be extended by two years at a time. The prerequisite is that at least one year of coaching activity in the Bundesliga , regional league or the top division at state level for men or women (in most cases the upper league ) can be proven. It could also have been a male or female A youth team. In addition, proof of participation in a recognized advanced training event must be provided during this period.
The expiry of a license and its reacquisition
If a license is not renewed within a two-year dormant period, it will expire. The B and C trainer license can be obtained again by providing evidence of a trainer activity and a further training event of at least 30 teaching units. In order to regain the A-trainer license, at least 80 teaching units must be completed in addition to proof of trainer activity.
Remarks
- No trainer or instructor license is required to support youth teams at regional level.
- In the event of such violations, a trainer's license can be withdrawn for a period of up to two years or permanently. Fines of up to 5000 euros are also possible.
- A handball coach is often supported by an assistant coach ( co-coach ) and a goalkeeping coach .
- If the team fails, handball coaches - like many of their colleagues in other sports - are usually the first to fear the corresponding consequences (often dismissal or contract termination).
