Haardt an der Weinstrasse is a Palatinate wine-growing village. It was on June 7, 1969 as a local district in the one kilometer south to county-level city Neustadt an der Weinstraße ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) incorporated (the old name Neustadt an der Haardt or Neustadt (Haardt) should not be confused with today's district designation).

geography

location

The place is on the eastern slope of the Haardt to the Rhine plain at an average height of about 150  m above sea level. NHN . This location allows an excellent distant view over the 50 m lower extending plain. In addition, the low mountain range in the west keeps a large part of the precipitation, so that the summers are characterized by warm and dry weather conditions. As a result of the mild climate, there are large stocks of sweet chestnuts in the forest adjacent to the west , which go back to Roman times . To the west of the settlement area in the middle of the Palatinate Forest is the Meisental . Neighboring in the south are the core town of Neustadt and in the northeast the further districts of Gimmeldingen and Mußbach .

Elevations and waters

Schlossberg

The place is dominated by the 554 meter high Weinbiet ; its east runner Nebelberg is located immediately northwest of the settlement area. To the west of this is the 230 meter high Schlossberg , which is a south-eastern branch of the wine region. Wolfsberg is further to the west . The Sulzwiesengraben flows through the village in a west-east direction .

history

Place name

The name means "forest" and was probably created because of the immediate vicinity of the wooded mountain range of the same name, the Haardt , which forms the eastern edge of the Middle Palatinate Forest .

timeline

The first documented mention of the settlement dates from 1256, when the monasteries Heilsbruck and St. Lambrecht were given property in Haardt. The settlement was likely to have arisen 50 to 100 years earlier, when people settled in the area after the Winzingen Castle was built .

From the beginning of its history the place was part of the Electoral Palatinate and remained so until the end of the 18th century.

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Haardt was incorporated into the canton of Neustadt (Donnersberg) and had its own Mairie . In 1815 the place Austria was added. Just one year later, the place, like the entire Palatinate, changed to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1817 to 1862 the community belonged to the Landkommissariat Neustadt ; from this the district office of Neustadt emerged.

From 1939 Haardt was part of the district of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse . After the Second World War , the place within the French occupation zone became part of the administrative district of Palatinate in the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate . As part of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , Haardt was incorporated into the independent city of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse on June 7, 1969.

The population decline between 1617 and 1655 can be explained by the Thirty Years' War , the main clashes of which took place in the Palatinate area in the early 1620s; the population fell victim to war or epidemics or decided to emigrate because of the devastation .

religion

Since 1570 Haardt is mostly Protestant - reform . A church with a roof turret as an emergency tower for two bells was built in 1781/82 through personal contributions and building material gifts from the surrounding communities. In 1806 the village was given its own parish through a decree by Napoleon . The roof turret of the church was removed in 1867, and the church was given a real tower that is 36 m high and offers space for a clock and four bells (three Hamm bells from 1949, one Bachert bell from 1963).

Former municipal coat of arms

Coat of arms of Haardt on the Wine Route
Blazon : "Split by black and silver, on the right a left-facing, red-armored and tongued golden lion, on the left a blue chair (vine knife) with a golden handle."
Justification of the coat of arms: The former municipal coat of arms shows on the right side a Palatinate lion turned to the left and on the left a chair pointing to the right . The lion points to the rule of the Palatinate, the winegrower's knife to the main occupation of the inhabitants. The coat of arms goes back to the oldest seal of the Haardt Court from 1568 and was awarded on May 15, 1845 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria as the municipal coat of arms.

Sights and culture

Cultural monuments

Haardter Castle
Monument zones

The Haardter Castle and the town centers of Mittelhaardt , Unterhaardt and Vorderhaardt are each designated as monument zones. The first is a manor house built in 1875 on the slope of the Schlossberg. It was built on the northeastern railing of the ruins of the 11th century Winzingen Castle

Protestant Church

Although the Protestant church was built in the baroque style , the interior is kept simple. The Stumm organ is one of your most valuable pieces of equipment; it is even counted among the historically significant instruments of the Palatinate Church. Despite various changes, it has been used in church services and concerts for over 200 years.

The organ was delivered by the Stumm brothers in 1785 at a price of 1000 guilders and installed within four weeks. In 1867, and especially in the 1950s, renovations were carried out, although these were not based on the principles of monument preservation. In 1985, the organ's anniversary year, it was restored by the Steinmeyer company from Oettingen with the aim of restoring the original as much as possible.

The organ is a large single-manual instrument that has a number of special features. Originally the pedal only had 15 tones, now it has 27 tones, but only three sounding voices. There are 13 sounding voices in the manual. Some voices are divided into bass and treble, so that the organ has a total of 22 stops and the pedal coupler.

The case of the organ is an ornament of the church interior, especially since the original prospect pipes have been preserved. Together with the wind chests and the partially preserved pipework, around 70 to 75% of the organ still exists from the time it was built.

Other cultural monuments

In the Palatinate Forest, but not far from the settlement area, is Wilhelmsplatz , which functions as a forest festival area. On the Wolfsberg there is also the so-called Stone Deer , a high relief created in the 19th century.

Nature and parks

There are several trees within the settlement area that are designated as natural monuments . The Haardtrand - Schloßberg nature reserve exists on site .

In the south of the Haardt lies the approximately 12,000 m² Mediterranean park, Dr.-Welsch-Terrasse . Here and on the nearby Leopold-Reitz-Weg ( Sonnenweg ) there is an attractive view of Neustadt and its surroundings. The facility has, among other things, a goldfish pond , a cactus garden , a drinking water fountain and at the highest point a war memorial showing a naked warrior (of the former K. B. Reserve Infantry Regiment No. 5). The site was once privately owned by Theodor Welsch (1842–1909), a former Protestant pastor of the Haardt community, and was then laid out as a garden. In the year of his death, Welsch bequeathed the complex to the city in order to ensure that the view (with good visibility in the east-northeast ) of the Odenwald near Heidelberg, about 45 km away, would be permanently preserved.

regional customs

Every year on the second weekend in May, the Haardter Wine Festival is held on the street with the popular “wheelbarrow race”. On the first weekend in September, the Haardter Quetschekuche-Kerwe takes place, where pieces of an oversized plum cake are sold and the "Quetschekern-Zielspucken" is offered.

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

Mattern winery

Haardt used to be dominated by viticulture . The hillside location means that cold air flows off towards the plain, so that there is no frost damage to the vineyards in early spring . The Müller-Catoir winery is located in Haardt . The Haardter winegrowers' cooperative once existed on site , which was merged into the Weinbiet Manufaktur in 2002. In the 1970s, a residential monastery was built on the Haardter district that contains around 400 apartments and is operated by the Society for Services in Old Age (GDA). There is also a nursing home (around 150 places) and a specialist orthopedic clinic.

In Haardt, on the southern slope of the Nebelberg, is the only quarry still in operation in the Palatinate Forest that has been mining yellow-white Haardt sandstone since at least the middle of the 18th century. Broken stones were also used during the renovation of large historical buildings, e.g. B. Castle and water tower in Mannheim, castle and university in Heidelberg and Speyer imperial cathedral.

During the 1920s, Der Eisenhammer , a regional newspaper of the NSDAP, was published locally .
