Hajredin Kuçi

Hajredin Kuçi (born January 2, 1971 in Peć , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Kosovar lawyer and politician . He was Deputy Prime Minister in the government from 2008 to 2017 and also served as Minister of Justice of the Republic of Kosovo between 2011 and 2016.

Kuçi is one of the founding members of the Partia Demokratike e Kosovës (PDK) and is currently the party's deputy chairman.

academic career

Kuçi studied at the University of Pristina , where he obtained a master's degree in civil commercial law in 1993 . He was part of the Albanian student movement, which campaigned for Kosovo to be independent from Yugoslavia. At the time, Kuçi was involved in an independent student association; He was also the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper “Bota e Re” ( alb . for New World ) between 1992 and 1994 .

At Bilkent University in Ankara he received his master's degree in international relations with his thesis , and later he received his doctorate in Pristina . Kuçi received an international doctorate in law from the University of Graz . He also completed specialist studies in Washington, DC , Graz , Geneva , Berlin and Zagreb .

After the end of the Kosovo War , he continued his work at the University of Pristina, where he was Director of the Office for International Relations from 1997 to 2004 and then Vice-Rector for International Cooperation until 2005. Kuçi is also a professor at the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Pristina and at the Faculty of Law at the SEE University in Macedonia .

Hajredin Kuçi has published ten scientific papers inside and outside Kosovo and actively promotes academic development in Kosovo - for example, in 2001 he initiated a “summer program” at the University of Pristina, which he oversaw for four years.

Political career

In 1999 and 2000, Kuçi acted as a foreign policy advisor to the Kosovar Prime Minister. Between 2001 and 2008 he was a member of the parliament of the Republic of Kosovo and there, among other things, in the committees for parliamentary processes; Education, Science and Technology as well as in the Constitutional Committee, of which he was chairman until the new Kosovar constitution came into force in June 2008.

In January 2008 Hajredin Kuçi was appointed to the cabinet of Hashim Thaçi as Deputy Prime Minister. In February 2011 he was assigned the Justice Department. In July 2016, Kuçi was replaced as the new Minister of Justice by Dhurata Hoxha, although Prime Minister Isa Mustafa kept him as a deputy in the cabinet.

In the 2017 parliamentary elections, Kuçi did not achieve the required number of votes for a direct mandate in his home constituency of the municipality of Peja . He has therefore not been a member of parliament or government since the new legislative term.

Private

Hajredin Kuçi is married to Fatmire Kuçi and lives with her and their four children Argona, Jonida, Etna and Joni in Pristina .

In addition to the Albanian language, Kuçi is also proficient in written and spoken English and Serbian .
