The reigning world champion France secured the title of European champion for the first time with a contested 24:21 victory over Olympic champion Russia. The EM hosts were mostly just ahead - Russia was in the lead for the last time at 7: 6 (15th minute). In the entire game, no team was able to clear more than three goals. France was weakened shortly after the start of the second half by a red card against former world handball player Allison Pineau , but did not give up the lead until the end of the game.
