The 16th men's handball world championship was held from June 1 to June 11, 1999 in Egypt . A total of 24 teams initially competed against each other in groups. This was followed by elimination games with round of 16 , quarter-finals , semi-finals and finals as well as placement games for places three to eight. Sweden became world champions in 1999 after beating Russia 25:24 in the final.
