Terms of award
An international jury decides on the annual award of the prize. The prize money of 10,000 euros (as of 2021) is donated by the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. The legal and political sponsor of the award is the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought , which also organizes conferences and issues publications.
target
The Hannah Arendt Prize was founded in 1994 with the intention of stimulating public discussion on contentious political issues - in line with Arendt's dictum: "The sense of politics is freedom." Arendt's theoretical and practical commitment plays a special role in this totalitarian regimes , a commitment that did not become history after the end of the Cold War , but is still relevant against the background of efforts for global democratization and justice.
With the award, the donors not only want to honor academic achievements, but also work in public. It goes without saying: "People are honored who have accepted the public risk and recognize and communicate what is new in an apparently linearly progressive world, thinking and acting."
criticism
In 2007, the Presidium of the Jewish Community in the State of Bremen expressed irritation about the awarding of the prize to Tony Judt , whom they accused of anti-Zionist propaganda, which the jury concealed in its reasoning. In addition, the community complained that the award ceremony took place on a Friday evening and the subsequent discussion event on a Saturday morning. This would exclude Jews who wanted to observe the Shabbat from participating.
