Hanns Holenia

Hanns Holenia , actually Johann Baptist Emil Othmar , (born July 5, 1890 in Graz , † November 8, 1972 ibid) was an Austrian composer .

From 1908 to 1912 Holenia took lessons at the music school of the Musikverein für Steiermark in Graz and completed a degree in philosophy at the university . In 1913/14 he was tutored by Roderich Mojsisovics von Mojsvár in Graz and Emil von Reznicek in Berlin.

After the First World War he worked as an official in the state government in Graz. In 1922 he became Kapellmeister in St. Gallen and then in Zurich . From 1933 on, Holenia lived in Graz again, teaching instrumentation from 1940 to 1945 at the Graz University of Music Education.

Holenia created operas, orchestral works, chamber music, piano and choral works. His compositions are rooted in post-romanticism and impressionism .
