Hanns Sprung (born March 14, 1884 in Koblenz , died February 6, 1948 in Bendorf ) was a German painter and co-founder of two artist associations.

Life

From 1895 to 1901 the son of a master builder attended the Kaiser-Augusta-Gymnasium in Koblenz, where he received his first artistic suggestions from his drawing teacher William Straube . Jump completed his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy (1903–1905) and at the Academy in Karlsruhe (1905–1906). He was a master student of Wilhelm Trübner . After the First World War, Sprung did not return home from French captivity until 1920. He rented a studio in the Alte Burg and became a leading figure in the Koblenz artist scene, took part in the founding of the “ Künstlerbund Westmark ” (1921) and the Koblenz artist group “Das Boot” (1922). In 1929 he joined the NSDAP and in 1933 was appointed successor to the outgoing Koblenz museum director Adam Günther . In 1944, after the destruction of his parents' house, his studio and 120 of his works, Sprung moved to Bendorf.

Sprung primarily dealt with landscapes and (self) portraits. An exception in his work is the impressive Passion Altar, which is now in the Liebfrauenkirche (Koblenz) .

Influences

Wilhelm Trübner made Sprung known in Karlsruhe with portraits of Wilhelm Leibl and contemporary French art. The encounter with works by van Gogh also became decisive.
