Hans-Ernst Folz

Hans-Ernst Folz (born April 18, 1933 in Saarlouis ; † July 9, 2016 ) was a German lawyer and professor at the University of Linz , the Philipps University of Marburg and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover .

Life

Folz began studying law at Saarland University in 1952 . After changing to the University of Freiburg im Breisgau in the meantime , he returned to Saarbrücken in 1955, where he also passed his first state examination in law. He then worked from 1957 to 1962 as Werner Thieme's assistant at Saarland University. There he received his doctorate in 1961. iur. From 1962 to 1964 he was assistant to the rector of the university, Gerhard Kielwein ; Folz then worked on his habilitation, which he completed in 1968, whereupon he received the Venia legendi for the subjects of constitutional law, administrative law and international law.

In the 1970 summer semester, Folz held a chair at the Free University of Berlin , and in the following winter semester at the University of Marburg . After another representation in Berlin and an activity as a scientific advisor at the University of Saarland, Folz accepted an offer from the University of Linz to a full professorship at the Institute for International Law. In 1978 he was elected preacher of the law faculty there, and later dean. In 1980 Folz moved to the University of Marburg, where he was appointed to the chair that he had once represented. From 1982 to 1984 he also worked in Marburg, initially as preanor and later as dean. In 1987 Folz followed the call of the University of Hanover , where he held the chair for public law including international law and European law until his retirement in 1998. In the winter semesters 1988/89 and 1990/91 he was also dean of the law faculty in Hanover. In 1988 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.

During his academic career, Folz worked repeatedly in France. Until 1980 he was professeur associé at the University of Paris-Nord , in 1975 he had given guest lectures at the University of Nancy , in 1984 he was a brief professor at the University of Poitiers and in 1994 he was a visiting professor at the Sorbonne . In 1991 the French government awarded him the highest French science medal for his services.

Hans-Ernst Folz was married and the father of three children, including the law professor Hans-Peter Folz .
