Hans Bickel (born February 8, 1957 in Blonay ) is a Swiss Germanist . He is editor-in-chief of the Swiss Idiotikon and adjunct professor at the University of Basel . His main focus is on variation linguistics , lexicography and digital humanities .

Life

Bickel spent his first years in the canton of Vaud , where his parents, who were born in Bern, worked as farmers. He attended schools in the Bernese Seeland , and then studied German , ethnology and folklore in Basel ; he passed his licentiate in 1984. He received his doctorate in 1994 at the request of Robert Schläpfer with a thesis on traditional shipping on the waters of German-speaking Switzerland, which was based on the data of the Linguistic Atlas of German-speaking Switzerland . Previously, in 1990, he had spent a year in the United States , where he worked at Purdue University in West Lafayette , Indiana, at the Natural Language Processing Laboratory . From 1993 to 1996 he worked on the Linguistic Atlas of German-speaking Switzerland under Rudolf Trüb .

Bickel has been working as an editor at the Schweizerischer Idiotikon in Zurich since 2005 , which he has headed together with Christoph Landolt since 2019 . With a collective habilitation, he became a private lecturer at the University of Basel in 2006 , and since 2012 he has worked there - parallel to his work at the Idiotikon - as adjunct professor .

Act

Bickel initiated digital access to the Swiss German dictionary and its digital semantic register. At the University of Basel, his most important task was the trinational project Variant Dictionary of German , as its Swiss director from 1997 to 2004 and, for the new edition, from 2012 to 2015. He was also involved in various projects of the Swiss National Science Foundation there .

Since 2006 he has been responsible for ortsnames.ch - the database of Swiss name books , a platform for Swiss place names , which is now maintained by the Swiss Idiotikon. Since 2016 he has been the project manager of the Solothurn town and field names book . Before that, Bickel had been a member of the board of trustees for the name book of the municipalities in the canton of Basel-Landschaft , which came out in 2017.

Bickel has been a member since 2003 and has been President of the Duden Committee of the Swiss Association for the German Language since 2017 , a body that serves as the official Swiss contact for the Duden editorial team and is responsible for the representation of Swiss High German in the publisher's lexicographical publications. He is also a permanent member of the Standing Committee for Geographical Names and the Advisory Board of the International Society for Dialectology of German, the Dictionary of Bavarian Dialects in Austria and the Center for Digital Lexicography of the German Language .
