Hans Erich Apostle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Erich Apostel (born January 22, 1901 in Karlsruhe , † November 30, 1972 in Vienna ) was a German composer and representative of the Second Vienna School .

Life

Apostel studied from 1916 to 1919 piano, music theory and conducting with Alfred Lorenz in Karlsruhe . In 1920 he was Kapellmeister and répétiteur at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe. From 1921 to 1925 he was a student of Arnold Schönberg in Vienna, from 1925 to 1935 of Alban Berg . At the same time, he privately taught piano, music theory and composition.

Some of his compositions show his particular closeness to Expressionist painting - he was friends with Emil Nolde , Oskar Kokoschka and Alfred Kubin . During the National Socialism his music was considered " degenerate " and was not performed.

Apostel worked as a pianist, accompanist and conductor for contemporary music in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

After the war, Apostel helped set up the Austrian section of the Society for New Music . From 1947 to 1950 he was its president. He worked as an editor at Universal Edition in Vienna and was responsible for the new editions of Alban Bergs Wozzeck (1955) and Lulu (1963).

Despite the numerous prizes and awards (including the Austrian State Prize in 1957) that he received, his compositional work received little attention even after the end of the war.

His grave of honor is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 32 C, number 57).
