Hans Kalb (born July 17 or August 3, 1899 in Nuremberg , † April 5, 1945 in Altdorf near Nuremberg ) was a German football player , coach and dentist .

Player career

He played as a middle runner between 1917 and 1933 for the first soccer team of 1. FC Nürnberg . He played a total of 681 games. Kalb scored nine goals in 27 final rounds of the German championship . Between 1920 and 1928 he also came on 15 missions (two goals) for the German national soccer team .

The 1.85 m tall Hans Kalb was considered the “best German footballer of his time” ( Sepp Herberger ). He not only organized the defense of the 1. FC Nürnberg championship teams, but also initiated the club's flat passing game, which was highly praised in the 1920s, thanks to his overview and tactical understanding. His discoverer, the Nuremberg star player and coach Alfréd Schaffer , who brought him out of the 1. FCN youth team in 1917, taught him this in many hours of practice. In addition, he had very good shooting power, which made him dangerous for goals even from a distance. Its outstanding importance for 1. FC Nürnberg was made clear by the well-known slogan “Club without a calf - half” .

The long-time captain of the club and the German national team was not without controversy. His penchant for good food and alcohol led to the fact that over time he became more and more overweight. His tendency to shout loudly on the soccer field or to provoke his opponent with his slogans was also criticized. His lack of restraint earned him many a ban. In 1926, after the derby against SpVgg Fürth, he was banned from gambling for two months because of assault. In 1928, his lack of self-control finally brought him the end of his national team career. At the Olympic soccer tournament he was sent off in the game against eventual tournament winner Uruguay . He had criticized the referee several times, who - also from the point of view of many observers - made his decisions in favor of Uruguay. Germany retired with a 1: 4 defeat. Hans Kalb was blamed for the defeat and banned from the national team forever by the German Football Association . This, however, also because he left early without comment.

The increasing excess weight was already 25 kilograms in 1930. Hans Kalb was able to shine less and less. The editor of Kicker Walther Bensemann commented on his performance in a 3: 6 defeat of 1. FCN against Hertha BSC : “With Kalb a system has fallen, yes, I would like to say, the last hope for years. I fear that the seven fat years will be followed by seven lean ones. "

He wasn't entirely wrong about that. It was not until 1936 that 1. FC Nürnberg became German champions again. However, as coach of 1. FC Nürnberg, Hans Kalb was also involved in this success. In 1933 he ended his career as a player after successfully completing his dental studies in 1932 with a doctorate - the subject of the 15-page dissertation was sebum glands - nevus - and had opened his own practice.

Hans Kalb died on April 5, 1945 as a result of blood poisoning.
