With the IX. At the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam , a football competition was held. The tournament took place eight weeks before the official opening on July 29, 1928. There, then, as the only footballer in Olympic history, the Dutchman Harry Dénis took the Olympic oath . After 1924, Uruguay became Olympic champion again, with Argentina playing the first purely South American final. Until 2004 it was the only all-South American final at the Olympic soccer tournaments. Since the final ended 1-1 after extra time, there was a replay three days later, which the Uruguayans won 2-1. Both met again two years later in the final of the first soccer World Cup . The German team was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Uruguay in their first game against a South American team. With Egypt, an African team reached a semi-finals for the first time. For Mexico the round of 16 against Spain was the first game in Europe and against a European team, as well as the first game counted by FIFA and the consolation match against Chile the first game against a South American team. In the semifinals, Argentina and Egypt played their first international match between a South American and an African team.
Most of the matches in the 1928 Olympic football tournament were held in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam . Two matches of the round of 16 took place in the Het Nederlandsch Sportpark near the Olympic Stadium and the consolation round was played in the Monnikenhuize in Arnhem and in the Spangen Stadium in Rotterdam .
