Gino Rossetti (born November 7, 1904 in La Spezia , † May 16, 1992 ibid) was an Italian football player .

Career

The Italian's first club was Virtus Spezia in his Ligurian hometown, before the offensive player ran for Spezia Calcio from 1921 . For the Aquilotti he played in the Italian championship, which at that time was still organized in the form of regional groups with subsequent finals. In 1924 Spezia occupied the penultimate place in Group B of the Northern League and had to go to the relegation play-off, where they managed to stay up. In 1925, the team ended up only in the last place in the table and had to go into the second division. Rossetti was Spezia's most successful goalscorer with seven of 16 goals. In the following season, as group winners, the promotion was immediately achieved.

Due to his performances, the striker was noticed by those in charge of FC Turin , which Spezia made an offer for the player. Spezia turned down the offer and the move only came about when Rossetti threatened to emigrate to Chile , where his brother was already a footballer. With the Turinese he formed with Adolfo Baloncieri and Julio Libonatti a powerful inner storm series, which was also known as the trio delle meraviglie . In his first season he was the third top scorer in the league with 19 goals, only his club colleague Libonatti and the Inter player Anton Powolny were ahead of him. The Turin team also won the final round, but the league title was withdrawn by the association because club officials had offered Juventus player Luigi Allemandi a bribe.

In the next season, Il Toro managed to win the final tournament again with his dream storm and thus the first championship title in the club's history. In 1928/29, the Turin team again achieved group victory, this time the championship title was played directly between the two group winners. After both FC Turin and AGC Bologna had won their home games, a playoff on neutral ground had to decide on the award of the title. In Rome , Bologna finally stayed 1-0 victorious, Rossetti could at least comfort himself with the title of top scorer . His mark of 36 goals has never been reached in the top Italian division since then.

Gino Rossetti stayed in Turin for four more years, but a second title would not succeed. In 1933 he switched to SSC Napoli . The best placement in his four years in Naples was a third place, but his scoring could not match the successful Turin times and remained single-digit in every season. He briefly returned to Turin for one season before ending his Serie B career with his hometown club.

In the national team Rossetti made his debut in 1927 against Switzerland , where he contributed a goal to the 5-1 victory. In 1928 he took part in the Summer Olympics with the national team, scoring a goal in two appearances and winning the bronze medal . He was also a member of the winning Italian team at the European Cup of National Football Teams from 1927 to 1930 , where he scored six goals in just four appearances and, together with his club colleague Julio Libonatti, was the most successful goalscorer of the competition. He played his best game in the national team in 1929 in a 4-3 win against Czechoslovakia , where he scored three goals. In total, Rossetti made 13 international appearances for the Azzurri , scoring nine goals.
