Giuseppe "Beppe" Signori (born February 17, 1968 in Alzano Lombardo ) is a former Italian football player .

Career

The striker Signori started his professional career in 1986 at Piacenza Calcio . In 1989 he moved to US Foggia . His breakthrough came when he went to Lazio Rome in 1992 . "Beppe" 'Signori became one of the most popular players here and became the Italian national player . In the national dress, however, he could never really assert himself and only took part in one major tournament, the 1994 World Cup in the USA . In 1997 he moved to Sampdoria Genoa for a year . He experienced a second spring between 1998 and 2004 at FC Bologna . He then moved to Greece to Iraklis Saloniki .

In October 2005 Signori moved to the Hungarian club FC Sopron , where he was active as a player- coach in the spring of 2006 and then ended his career.

"Beppegol" scored a total of 188 goals in 344 games in Serie A, making it one of the most successful goal scorers in the history of the Italian league. With 127 goals across all competitions for Lazio, he is the capital's most successful goalscorer after Silvio Piola .

Possible betting scandal

In a nationwide raid in Italy by the Cremona public prosecutor in June 2011, a gang of 30 suspected betting fraudsters were arrested, including Giuseppe Signori and 15 other players, club officials and betting shop operators.

The accused are said to have manipulated games in the first, second and third leagues in the past few months and then placed high bets on them at home and abroad. According to the Cremonese judge Guido Salvini, Signori is the main character of the alleged gang of fraudsters, which also includes Stefano Bettarini , Mauro Bressan , Antonio Bellavista and Cristiano Doni . Signori and his accomplices face several years imprisonment. The Italian Football Association announced legal action against the fraudsters.
