Beginnings in Argentina and Barcelona

Mauro Icardi was born in Rosario , the hometown of Lionel Messi . Due to economic difficulties, his family moved to Spain , where the then nine-year-old Mauro initially stormed for the local club UD Vecindario in Gran Canaria and scored 384 goals during his time there. In this way he managed to arouse the interest of larger teams and at the age of 15 he decided to move to the youth academy of FC Barcelona . Messi himself is said to have campaigned for the talent.

Sampdoria Genoa

Characterized as a classic center forward, Icardi did not fit into the concept of FC Barcelona, which relies on strikers to play, despite a good percentage of goals in various youth teams. That is why it was loaned to the Italian club Sampdoria Genoa in January 2011 with an option for a permanent commitment of 400,000 euros, which was later also drawn .

In his first year and a half in Genoa, Icardi was mainly used in the youth team of Sampdoria, where he met regularly. Towards the end of the 2011/12 season , on May 12, 2012, he was also able to celebrate his debut in the first team: In a Serie B game against SS Juve Stabia he was substituted on in the closing stages and scored a few minutes later the winning goal. In the 2012/13 season Sampdoria played again in Serie A and Icardi was able to celebrate his final breakthrough: With ten goals he was the most successful goalscorer of his team. He scored four goals on matchday 22 against Pescara alone , and scored three more goals in the two league games against champions Juventus Turin .

Inter Milan

Before the 2013-14 season , Inter Milan announced that they had acquired 50% of the transfer rights in Icardi. He played 23 competitive games (nine goals, two assists) in national competitions and was fifth with Inter. The Argentine scored his first competitive goal for the Nerazzurri on September 14, 2013 in the Derby d'Italia against Juventus Turin . In June 2014, Inter acquired the remaining 50% of Icardis transfer rights.

In the 2014/15 season Icardi was top scorer with 22 league goals together with Luca Toni . In his first European Cup season, the striker also made it to the eighth finals of the Europa League with the club . Following the season, the early contract extension at Inter was announced until June 30, 2019. In the 2015/16 season , the Argentine went under head coach Roberto Mancini as the successor to Andrea Ranocchia as the new team captain. As a regular player, Icardi was again the team's most successful attacker with 20 scorer points in 34 competitive games. On December 2, 2016, the Argentine wore a captain's armband in the club colors of the Brazilian club Chapecoense for the home game of Inter Milan against SSC Napoli . When LaMia flight 2933 crashed on November 28, several players and Chapecoenses officials were among the fatalities.

At the beginning of the second half of the 2018/19 season, Icardi was deposed as Inters captain. He was accused of not having clearly committed himself to the club and of having no support from the team. In addition, the Argentine had addressed his own fans with the words "If you don't love the club when it loses, you don't love it when it wins". There were also rumors of change around him, for example Real Madrid were interested in a commitment. Icardi was suspended for nine cross-competition games by the beginning of April 2019, but was then back in every game for Milan until the end of the season. The team was eliminated without him again in the second round of the Europa League, in the league they finished fourth.

Paris Saint-Germain

In early September 2019, the striker moved to French Ligue 1 to Paris Saint-Germain on loan without another competitive match for Inter until the end of the 2019/20 season . For the French, he completed 31 compulsory games (twelve goals, three assists) in national and international competitions. After the French championship was canceled , he was awarded the championship title with PSG, and in the Champions League, whose game operations are currently suspended, he and the team are in the quarter-finals.

At the end of May 2020, PSG withdrew the purchase option and provided Icardi with a contract until 2024.

National team

Icardi had already mastered the Italian language perfectly within four months of moving from Barcelona to Sampdoria. In addition to his Argentine passport, he also has an Italian one. Nevertheless, Icardi has chosen the national team of his country of birth because he feels like an Argentine. Between 2012 and 2013 he ran for the U-20 team of Argentina .

Icardi made his international debut for the senior national team of Argentina on October 10, 2013 under Alejandro Sabella in the South American classic against Uruguay .
