Andrés Mazzali (born July 22, 1902 in Guruyú , Montevideo , Uruguay , † October 30, 1975 ) was a Uruguayan football player and athlete .

Soccer

The Mazzali called El Buzo played in the club from 1919 to 1930 for the large Montevidean club Nacional . During this time, his club won five Uruguayan championship titles (1919, 1920, 1922, 1923, 1924), as well as two successes in the Copa Lipton (1924, 1927) and the 1929 victory in the Copa Newton . The Cup of the Copa Río de La Plata was also brought to Uruguay by his team in 1919 and 1920.

National team

At the 1924 Summer Olympics and 1928 Summer Olympics , he won the gold medal with the Uruguayan national soccer team . He played in the position of goalkeeper . However , he was denied participation in the 1930 World Cup , when Uruguay became world champions. He was part of the national team until shortly before the start of the tournament. However, he left the team hotel in Prado Park in Montevideo without permission to visit his family during the two-month preparatory training camp. The then coach Alberto Suppici then threw him out of the team. Further successes with the national team were winning titles at the South American Championships in 1923 , 1924 and 1926 . He also took part in the Campeonato Sudamericano in 1927 , which ended with the runner-up championship , as well as in the 1929 tournament, in which third place was achieved. He played a total of 21 international matches for Uruguay from May 26, 1924 to November 17, 1929.

Coaching

At the South American Championship in 1926, sports teacher Mazzali worked as a goalkeeper as well as coach of the Uruguayan national team. Even after the end of his active career in 1933, he continued to work as a coach.

Other sports

He was also the 1920 South American athletics champion in the 400-meter hurdles and silver medalist over the 200-meter hurdles distance, where he only had to admit defeat to the Chilean Harold Rosenqvist . Two years later he was again runner-up at the 1922 South American Athletics Championships in the 400 m hurdles final behind Enrique Thompson . He was also a member of the Uruguayan basketball team as a player at Club Atlético Olimpia , for which he was active for six years and with whom he won the Torneo Federal in 1923.
