The Campeonato Sudamericano of 1926 was the tenth game of the South American continental football championship and took place for the second time in Chile from October 12 to November 3. Despite Brazil's waiver , five nations were at the start, as Bolivia took part for the first time as the new sixth member of CONMEBOL .

As before, the championship was held in the league system (everyone against everyone). If there was a tie in first place, a playoff was planned. All games were played in Santiago de Chile at the Estadio Sport de Ñuñoa . At that time the stadium held around 15,000 spectators.

South American champions in 1926 were Uruguay for the sixth time.

Uruguay came, saw and won. After a year of abstinence, the appearance of the "Urus" could hardly have been more impressive. Four clear wins and an impressive goal difference speak a clear language. Even defending champions Argentina could not be dangerous for the Uruguayans this year. Outstanding in the "Urus", as in the Copa 1923, was the "Black Miracle" José Leandro Andrade, who was also named the best player of the tournament.

Argentina started this tournament furiously with 4: 0 points and 13: 0 goals, but in direct comparison with arch-rivals Uruguay they clearly lost out. Then the air was out for the Argentines and there was only one draw against host Chile. Due to the good goal difference it was enough for the runner-up.

Chile showed their best tournament performance so far at this "Copa" in their own country. The 7-1 win against newcomer Bolivia was the Chileans' first ever victory at a South American Championship. The clear 5: 1 success in the final game against the disappointing Paraguayos and the 1: 1 against defending champion Argentina are also impressive.

Paraguay disappointed even more than last year. The amount of defeat in particular must have been frightening. The 8-0 defeat against Argentina was the highest defeat in a "Copa" at all. Even more disappointing from Paraguay's point of view was the 1: 5 against Chile, a clear defeat against an opponent who had previously been considered weaker than their own team. If you include the abstinent Brazilians, Paraguay was only number 5 in South American football after this tournament.

Bolivia had to pay a lot of money in its first "Copa" participation. The game against Chile was Bolivia's first international match and therefore the sporting deficit to the other South American football nations, which had played international matches for several years, was huge. It should not decrease significantly in the coming years either.
