The Copa América 1983 was the 32nd game of the South American continental championship in football and took place from August 10 to November 4.
The mode of competition was identical to 1975 and 1979 . Once again, there was no tournament in the league system in a country, as in the past, but it was played in a combination of group phase and knockout system with a return leg. The preliminary round was made up of three groups with three participants each. The three group winners reached the semi-finals, while defending champions Paraguay automatically qualified for the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the goal difference decided, this was the lot. In the final, if there had been a tie after the return leg, a playoff would have been played on a neutral pitch, but this time it was not necessary. For the sixth time in the history of the competition, an audience of over one million was reached, but without breaking the record of 1945 .
Defending champion Paraguay failed in the semifinals to Brazil. Uruguay secured its twelfth title in total, drawing level with the previous record holder Argentina.
