Hans Schickelgruber

Hans Schickelgruber (born June 14, 1922 in St. Pölten ; † December 24, 2003 there ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and 29th mayor of St. Pölten.

Life

Hans Schickelgruber was born on June 14, 1922 in St. Pölten and experienced the economic hardship in the First Republic in his youth . After graduating from high school , he was called up for labor service in the German armed forces . Seriously wounded, he returned from captivity and decided on a teaching profession, which he learned at the federal teacher training institute in St. Pölten. After his time at Harland Secondary School in 1965, he was appointed District School Inspector. In 1967 he married Hannelore Schickelgruber, a trained textile merchant, who headed the fashion department at the Leiner furniture store .

Schickelgruber had been a member of the SPÖ since 1948, in 1956 he became a local councilor and two years later a councilor for education, culture, social affairs and health. In 1969 he became city party chairman and after the municipal council election in 1970 he was mayor of St. Pölten. He was confirmed in his office in 1972 , 1977 and 1982 . In the association of towns he worked as the Lower Austrian provincial chairman and nationwide as vice-president. Between 1972 and 1983 he took a seat in the Federal Council .

During his time as mayor, the first construction phase of the hospital , the sheltered workshop and the Stadtwald senior citizens' home were built. He also supported the revitalization of the former synagogue as a cultural venue.

He resigned from all his functions in 1985 due to old age and died on December 24, 2003 in St. Pölten. At the beginning of 2008 a street was named after him.
