Willi Gruber (born September 6, 1930 in Ossarn as Wilhelm Gruber ; † September 7, 2012 in St. Pölten ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and the 30th mayor of St. Pölten.

Life

Willi Gruber was born as Wilhelm on September 6, 1930 in Ossarn near Herzogenburg, the son of a Voith worker. After compulsory schooling, he learned the profession of lathe operator at Voith at its St. Pölten location .

After attending the Social Academy of the Chamber of Labor , he became a pension advisor at the pension insurance company in 1960 . In 1958 he was the youngest member of the local council, and from 1970 to 1985 he was the town councilor for construction in St. Pölten . He then succeeded Hans Schickelgruber as mayor. In 1986, during his term of office, St. Pölten was appointed state capital of Lower Austria . He was the longest serving mayor of St. Pöltens in the post-war period, when he surprisingly resigned as mayor and city party leader on June 29, 2004.

In the municipal council elections on November 23, 1986, the St. Pölten SPÖ was able to achieve their best election result of all time with him as the top candidate.

He was the brother of the Landtag member Karl Gruber , who died in 2011 , and has a daughter with his wife Hermine Gruber who is married to the Vice Mayor Franz Gunacker.

Before the municipal council election in 1996 , he had his name changed from his maiden name Wilhelm to Willi for the preferential voting campaign.
