Hans Valär ( [faˈlɛːr] , in Davos Walser German [faˈlæːr] ; * December 8, 1871 in Dischma , Davos ; † April 11, 1947 in Chur ; pseudonym: Hannsch Hans us Dischmaa ) was a Swiss construction engineer and architect who worked for forty years acted as spa director of Davos. He became known throughout Switzerland for his regional humoresque in Davos German broadcast by Radio Beromünster .

Life

Hans Valär grew up as the oldest of five children on a mountain farm in remote Dischma. After the eighth year of school, he came to the teachers' college in Chur , not yet fourteen years old . After receiving his teacher license in 1889, he returned to his homeland and worked as a primary school teacher in Davos Glaris for several years . From 1893 onwards, during the long summer holidays at the Bündner Winter School , he trained as a carpenter , trained as a qualified construction technician at the Technikum Winterthur and finally worked as an architect in a construction business. From 1901 to 1902 he headed the Davos trade school and was then from 1902 to 1942 director of the newly founded tourist association of Davos ("Kurdirektor"). For a long time he was also a board member of the International Skating Union . Furthermore, he was co-founder and president of the Bündner Verkehrsverein and co-founder of the Davos Local History Museum.

In addition, he wrote humorous stories in the archaic Davos German of his youth, some with autobiographical background. «Valär combined modernity as a tourism expert in a way that is unthinkable today ... with his love for the world, as a local historian and dialect writer, for the world of old Davos."

Valär was married to Marie Branger; the couple remained childless. He was a versatile and busy man, "one of the most capable men that the Davos landscape has produced for decades".

Valär is still one of the most famous dialect authors in Graubünden. Some of his Walser German stories, “prose that is well told and carefully nurturing the old Davos vocabulary”, were printed in the Davos newspaper under the name “Hannsch Hans us Dischmaa” (“Des Hans Hans from Dischma”) . At the end of the 1930s, he also told his stories under this name on what was then the state broadcaster Radio Beromünster , making it nationally known. The book Dr Türligiiger and other stories on Davaasertüütsch came out only after his death; it was so successful that it was reprinted several times. Selected stories were recorded on records and published during his lifetime. Another recording, subsequently released as a long-playing record, took place in 1976; In 2001 it was published as a compact disc. Valär's stories, which were in turn inspired by the work of Georg Fient from Prättigau, set the tone for other Davos dialect authors , such as Paul Ambühl-Gehri , Martin Kindschi or Martin Schmid .

As the spa director, Valär was particularly interested in the ice rink , which he developed from an old ice pavilion into an “ ice rink house” so that numerous national and international speed skating events could take place in Davos . The implementation of the spa park, which was suggested by the medical profession, and the expansion of the walking paths were also significantly influenced by Valär. He also set up a bus service between Davos Dorf and Davos Platz and organized the rubbish collection “according to modern principles”.
