Hans Walter Hütter (born December 15, 1954 in Mönchengladbach ) is a German historian and has been President of the House of History Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany since 2007 .

Life

After studying history , classical philology and educational science at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf , he passed his first state examination in 1983 and received his doctorate in 1984 under Peter Hüttenberger . In 1986 he passed his second state examination and began to work as a research assistant at the House of History Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany ( Bonn ). In 1991 he became Deputy Director there and has been President and Professor of the House of History Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany since June 2007 .

From 1975 to 2007 Hütter performed numerous tasks in Mönchengladbach as a knowledgeable citizen, member of the district council and the city council. a. as deputy chairman and cultural policy spokesman for the CDU council group, as a member of the board of trustees of the United Städtische Bühnen Mönchengladbach / Krefeld , as chairman of the supervisory board of the Marketinggesellschaft Mönchengladbach (MGMG) and as a member of the plenary assembly of the Euregio Rhine-Maas . At the end of July 2007 he resigned all municipal mandates and duties. He remained a member of the CDU in Mönchengladbach.

Until the end of 2019 he was a lecturer at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . He is chairman of the museum advisory board of the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr (ZMSBw) , member of the board of trustees of the House of European History in Brussels , of the scientific advisory board of the House of Austrian History , of the foundation board of the Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation Foundation, and of the scientific advisory board for Hambacher Schloss , on the Advisory Board of the Berlin Wall Foundation , on the Scientific Advisory Board and Board of Trustees of Documentation Obersalzberg and on the Board of Trustees of the Federal President's History Competition. He has been a member of the board of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung since January 2018 .

In February 2020, the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the House of History of North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf, chaired by the President of the State Parliament André Kuper (MdL), appointed Hütter as chairman of the Presidium of the new Museum Foundation . Together with the director of the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn , Dr. Gabriele Uelsberg , and the director of the Ruhr Museum Essen, Prof. Dr. Heinrich Theodor Grütter , he will hold this office on a voluntary basis until the end of 2022.

Hans Walter Hütter has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class , which the Minister of Culture of North Rhine-Westphalia , Christina Kampmann , presented to him on January 11, 2017 for his decades of commitment to culture.
