Hansjürg Steinlin

Hansjürg Steinlin (born April 9, 1921 in St. Gallen ; † January 31, 2004 ) was a Swiss forest scientist and university professor .

Life

Steinlin grew up in St. Gallen and studied law, political science and forestry at the ETH Zurich . He then worked as a forest engineer at the ETH in the cantonal forest service and then switched to the Federal Institute for Forest Research in Zurich, where he worked scientifically. In 1955 he was at the ETH Zurich with the thesis Methodology of field trials in Hauungsbetrieb doctorate . After that he had a teaching position at the ETH, where he read about "Work apprenticeships, timber harvesting and timber transport" until 1973.

In 1958 he received a call to the newly created chair for forest use and forest ergonomics at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . Steinlin was rector of the university from 1970 and was elected President of the then West German Rectors' Conference (WRK) for three years in 1977 .

From 1973 to 1977 he was director of the Forest Resources Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome and was also the personal representative of the director general for the coordination of all environmentally relevant activities of the FAO.

In 1980 he returned to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and founded the new Institute for Land Care at the Faculty of Forestry and held the chair for “World Forestry and Land Care”. Steinlin's main areas of research were forest technology, forest policy , development policy and land maintenance . In 1986 Steinlin retired.

Hansjürg Steinlin came up with the idea of ​​creating the Binding Forest Prize for exemplary forest care. From 1987 to 1999 he chaired the board of trustees for the Binding Waldpreis and decisively shaped the profile of the award.

He was a member of the Swiss Forest Association.

In recognition of his "extraordinary services to the university as rector in particularly difficult times", the University of Freiburg awarded him the university medal in silver on January 28, 1987.

Danzer AG donated the Hansjürg Steinlin Prize of the Faculty of Forest and Environmental Sciences (for outstanding dissertation, master's thesis, bachelor thesis).
