Harald Seiler
Harald Seiler (born July 16, 1910 in Bielefeld , † February 19, 1976 in Palma ) was a German art historian and museum director .
Life
Harald Seiler studied art history , German literature and history in Leipzig , Munich , Vienna and Münster . In 1937 he was at the University of Münster with the work The beginnings of the art care in Westphalia doctorate .
In the same year, Seiler first became a volunteer and later a research assistant at the State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Münster, interrupted by military service from 1941 to 1945. In 1952 he took over the management of the Municipal Museum in Wuppertal .
From 1962 until his retirement in August 1975, Harald Seiler was director of the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover . The department for modern art begun by Ferdinand Stuttmann was expanded under his leadership . So work was, for example, Pablo Picasso and Kurt Schwitters bought, the Max Beckmann expanded Imagery, a sculpture set -Halle and - on the initiative of Lydia Dorner, the widow of Alexander Dorner - that of El Lissitzky designed and from the Nazis destroyed Abstract Cabinet reconstructed.
Harald Seiler initiated the series Low German Contributions to Art History , which he also edited, and published in particular on art and artists of the 20th century, such as Paula Modersohn-Becker , Franz Marc , Grethe Jürgens and Kurt Schwitters . These and similar artists were also the subject of his numerous lecture events.
In 1972 Seiler was awarded the Loyalty Certificate of the State of Lower Saxony .
