Harold Jacob Smith (born July 2, 1912 in New York City , New York , † December 28, 1970 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film actor and screenwriter who won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1959 with Nedrick Young Received for escape in chains .

biography

In 1957 he was involved in the production of a film for the first time with the script for Escape to Mexico by Allan Dwan .

For the original screenplay for the film adaptation of Escape in Chains by Stanley Kramer from 1958, he and Nedrick Young won an Oscar for best original screenplay in 1959. At the same time, he and Young received the Edgar Allan Poe Award for best film script , the New York Film Critics Circle Award for best screenplay (1958) and the Writers Guild of America Award for best American drama (1959). In the film adaptation he also played the role of the prison transport driver.

At the Academy Awards in 1961 , he was nominated together with Young for the Oscar for the best adapted screenplay , namely for Wer den Wind sät (1960) by Stanley Kramer.
