The Helsingborgs Idrottsförening , usually as Helsingborgs IF abbreviated or especially in Sweden and HIF, is a Swedish football club from the southern Swedish Helsingborg . The spelling Hälsingborgs IF is found for the period between 1912 and 1971 , when the city name was changed due to a spelling reform or this change was reversed as part of a municipal reform in 1971.

The association, founded in 1907, was one of the founding members of the Superettan in 1924 . Since then, the competition team has won the championship title and the national cup five times . She reached the double twice .

Because of its red jerseys, the club has the nickname "di röe" ( the reds ), the other nickname "Mjölkkossan" ( dairy cows ) results from the high number of spectators at away games in the 1920s and a congratulatory telegram from IFK Göteborg after the win the Allsvenskan returned in 1929. The association has spread beyond the motto "Skåne stolthet" ( Skåne pride given).

history

Helsingborgs IF was founded on June 4th 1907 when Svea Helsingborg and Svithiod Helsingborg merged. Seven years later, the club first attracted attention when it reached the final with a 5-1 victory over the then record champions Örgryte IS as part of the Svenska Mästerskapet , which was then held in cup form . However, this was lost to AIK, who was based in Stockholm at the time, with a 7-2 defeat. In 1918 the team with the later 50-time national goalkeeper Sigge Lindberg was again in the final, this time the IFK Göteborg prevailed with a 5-0 victory.

Course of the placements since the introduction of the Allsvenskan

Although Helsingborgs IF were denied national success at the time, the club was one of the twelve founding members of Allsvenskan in 1924. The club was the only one able to break the dominance of the Gothenburg clubs. If the Gothenburg clubs GAIS and Örgryte IS ended the league as first in the table twice in the first four events , HIF drew level by winning the Allsvenskan in 1929 and 1930. At that time, however, the championship title was not awarded, this was only introduced with the following season. Outstanding club representatives at the time, alongside Lindberg, included Harry Lundahl - the Allsvenskan top scorer in both years - and “Massa” Alfredsson .

Helsingborgs IF slipped for a short time, especially with the departure of the top performers, but with young talents like Torsten Bunke the club won the official championship title for the first time at the end of the 1932/33 season. In the following season the title was defended. As reigning champions, the club only got five points in the first half of the 1934/35 season , but an improved point yield in the second half did not help to keep them up. The stay in the second division lasted two seasons, then the club re-established itself in the Allsvenskan. In the 1940/41 season , the club became champions for the third time in the club's history, and also won the final of the first-ever national cup against IK Sleipner .

In the following years Helsingborgs IF wavered between the top group and the relegation battle, but in the front area the championship was dominated by IFK Norrköping and Malmö FF . The team played for the title several times around 1950. Towards the end of the 1950s and for much of the 1960s, it finally succeeded, especially in the bottom third of the table. A surprising third place in the table in the 1967 season behind champions Malmö FF and previous year's champions Djurgårdens IF was followed by the second relegation in the club's history to the second division.

For a long time, Helsingborgs IF only played in the lower league area. In 1972 the club even went down to the third division, but rose again straight away. At times in the promotion race, the second division team even signed an international star in 1976 with Roger Magnusson . Nevertheless, it was not enough to return, but in 1986 HIF rose again from the third division. This time the third division stay lasted three seasons, in the 1989 season the team won 22 of their 26 season games and returned to the second division. Here, too, she was immediately successful and, as second in the table, one point behind BK Häcken , she missed the promotion games to Allsvenskan. The club also played for promotion in the following years, but the promotion games, which were played in various modes after league reforms, were only successfully designed in 1992.

Helsingborgs IF established itself in the Allsvenskan. Behind IFK Göteborg, which dominated the first half of the 1990s, the vice-cup winner from 1994 - IFK Norrköping had prevailed after Golden Goal in the final in Göteborg - the runner-up in the 1995 season, combined with the first entry into the European Cup . In the 1996/97 UEFA Cup , she moved into the round of 16 after successes over FK Dinamo Minsk , Aston Villa and Neuchâtel Xamax , where the club was eliminated by the Belgian representative RSC Anderlecht . Also placed in the top half of the table in the following seasons, the club just missed the second double in the club's history in the 1998 season . Although the cup finals were won on penalties against Örgryte IS in the summer , AIK prevailed in the championship race in the autumn. In the new edition of the duel in the following season, HIF prevailed this time and won the Von Rosens Cup 58 years after the last championship win . The club had thus qualified for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League . After a success over BATE Baryssau , the Italian representative Inter Milan was kicked out of the competition in the following round . In the group stage, HIF met Rosenborg Trondheim , Paris Saint-Germain and FC Bayern Munich , despite a win against Trondheim, the club was eliminated from the bottom of the table. However, in the 2000/01 Champions League season , the team was the only team in the Munich Olympic Stadium to defeat the eventual winners Bayern Munich, the meeting ended goalless. Although the club was runner-up in the season following the championship, they were six points behind Halmstads BK .

At first Helsingborgs IF could not build on the success. In the championship, the team had to be content with places in the middle of the table. In 2006 the team won the national cup for the third time, and Gefle IF was defeated in the final . This success marked the beginning of a change for the better. In the 2007/08 UEFA Cup , the club survived the group stage as runner-up and only had to admit defeat to Dutch club PSV Eindhoven in the round of 32. At the same time, it established itself in the area of the European Cup. In the 2009 season only eighth in the table, the club signed Conny Karlsson as the new trainer. Under his leadership, the club was runner-up in 2010 and won the national cup again. In the 2011 season , the club finally dominated Swedish football. In addition to winning the championship, he successfully defended his title in the cup and won the Supercup .
