Swedish Men's Football Cup
The Swedish Football Cup , ( Swedish: Svenska Cupen ), is the national cup competition for club teams in Swedish football . The winner qualifies for the UEFA Europa League .
Since the introduction of new rules in 2012 with fewer teams, 98 teams now take part every year. These are the 16 teams of the Fotbollsallsvenskan (1st division), the 16 teams of the Superettan (2nd division) and 66 teams from subordinate leagues.
mode
The mode of holding the national cup was varied several times, at times the staging of the competition introduced in the Second World War due to the lack of playing opportunities for the national team was suspended.
Until 2011, the cup competition was played in the knockout system . Regional cup winners and amateur representatives competed in the first round, and the representatives from Allsvenskan and Superettan only joined in the second round . These 64 teams played the cup winners in the subsequent rounds, who were crowned in the final after the end of the first division season.
In 2012 the Swedish national association reformed the mode of competition; since then a combination of a knockout system and a round-robin tournament has been used. While in the first two rounds, as before, in the knockout system, regional cup winners and amateur representatives or the teams from Allsvenskan and Superettan who join in the second round play the promotion to the next round in one game, the third round takes place one Group stage with the 32 teams still represented. The quarter-finalist who progresses as the group winner is determined in eight groups, after which the competition continues again in the knockout system until the final game, which is played in the middle of the season in May.
