He lived and worked for a long time in Johannesburg , South Africa , in order to better explore the southern starry sky. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, he discovered 39 asteroids there during his activity. Among them was the asteroid named after himself (1666) van Gent . In addition, he was (co-) discoverer of 3 comets , namely C / 1941 K1 (van Gent), C / 1943 W1 (van Gent-Peltier-Damaica) and C / 1944 K2 (van Gent).
