Henry John Heinz (born October 11, 1844 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ; † May 14, 1919 ibid) was a German-American entrepreneur and founder of the HJ Heinz Company .

Life

Heinz was born as one of eight children of German immigrants. His father Johann Heinrich Heinz (born August 5, 1811 in Kallstadt ; † December 23, 1891 in Pittsburgh) came from the Palatinate , his mother Anna Margaretha Schmidt from Kruspis in Hesse . The entrepreneur Friedrich Trump , who also immigrated to America from Kallstadt , was a grandfather of the 45th US President Donald Trump , was a second cousin of Henry John Heinz.

In 1869 Heinz and his friend L. Clarence Noble founded the Heinz Noble & Company in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania , the main product of which was horseradish in clear glasses to prove the purity of the product. In 1875 this company had to file for bankruptcy. A year later he founded the F. & J. Heinz Company with his brother and a cousin , and tomato ketchup appeared in their product range a few years later. In 1888 Heinz took over the shares of his business partners, restructured the company and renamed it HJ Heinz Company . High quality standards and advertising were among Heinz's recipes for success.

In his old age, Heinz was several times in Kallstadt and spent spa stays in Bad Kissingen , most recently at the age of 69 in 1914, when he was surprised by the First World War and was not allowed to leave the hotel. Nevertheless, he managed to escape and return to the USA via Holland. This was his last visit to Germany.

On May 14, 1919, Heinz died of pneumonia . Afterwards his son Howard Heinz ran the company until 1941 and later his grandson Henry John Heinz II until 1987 and expanded it. His great-grandson, the politician Henry John Heinz III , was married to the philanthropist Teresa Heinz and died in 1991 when his private plane crashed.
