Henry Stöhr

Henry Stöhr (born June 1, 1960 in Reichenbach ) is a former judoka from the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He won an Olympic silver medal in 1988.

Sports career

Stöhr did not begin his sporting career until 1977 at TSG Rodewisch . A year later, the 1.94 meter tall athlete won the district championship and was delegated to SC Dynamo Hoppegarten . In 1981 he won his first GDR championship title in the open category. The following year, Stöhr won his first major title when he won the heavyweight category at the 1982 European Championships in Rostock. A year later he won bronze at the World Championships in Moscow. Stöhr was particularly successful at the 1986 European Championships in Belgrade, when he won gold in the open class and silver in the heavyweight division. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul Stöhr reached the final in the heavyweight division, where he was defeated by Keikoku against Hitoshi Saitō . In 1990 Stöhr won the last championship title of the German Judo Association of the GDR in the heavyweight division and his 13th GDR title overall. For his GDR championship title, he and Petra Sonntag , who had won eleven individual titles at GDR championships, were included in the 1992 Guinness Book of Records .

In 1990 he moved to TSV Abensberg and was immediately German heavyweight champion in the final fight against Jochen Plate in Germany, so that he was two-time German title holder in one year. In 1991 he won his second European title. In his second Olympic participation in 1992 in Barcelona , Stöhr was eliminated in the round of 16 against David Douillet . Stöhr's last major championship was the 1993 World Cup in Hamilton , where he lost the final against Rafał Kubacki .

Stöhr was a trained machining worker. After moving to SC Dynamo Hoppegarten , he rose as a sports soldier to lieutenant in the People's Police. After five years in Abensberg, Henry Stöhr moved back to Vogtland in 1995. He is the coach of the judo Bundesliga club Ippon Rodewisch , the club where he started his career under the then name TSG Rodewisch .

Stöhr was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit several times in the GDR ; In 1988 he received this medal in silver.
