Herbert Bastian (born December 10, 1952 in Emmersweiler ) is a German chess player , teacher and official.

Bastian has held the title of International Master of the World Chess Federation FIDE since 2005 . He reached the norms for this in 1981 at a grandmaster tournament in Baden-Baden , in February 2004 at the German championship in Höckendorf and in March 2005 in the French 2nd division.

In 1972 he took part in a German individual championship for the first time, in Oberursel . In 1976 he won the Dähne Cup . In July 1981 he won in Baden-Baden against Viktor Kortschnoi , who was one of the world's best at the time. In 1982 he was shared second in Bad Neuenahr together with Peter Ostermeyer at the German Championship, which Manfred Glienke won. 1983 Bastian took part with the German national team in the European team championship in Plovdiv . In March 2002 the Saarlander won the Dorint Cup in Bad Brückenau , in December 2004 the R2C2 Christmas Open in Paris . In April 2010 he became Saarland individual chess champion for the 20th time in Homburg , his first title he won in 1972.

His first club was SC Emmersweiler , which he joined in 1966. From 1982 to 1992 Bastian played for Munich in 1836 in the German Chess League, where he only missed one competition in the first division. He now plays in the Oberliga Südwest for the Saarbrücken Chess Association , with which he also played in the 2nd Bundesliga . In the French leagues Nationale 1 and Nationale 2 he has played for the Lorraine club Épinal on the second and top board since 2002 .

Since 1991 he has been in charge of the chess corner section in the Saarbrücker Zeitung , which he took over from Otto Benkner , who had been in charge of it since 1948.

Bastian was President of the Saarland Chess Association from 1992 to 2016 . He is the spokesman for the working group of the regional associations and also a member of the training commission of the German Chess Federation (DSB). He is also involved in trainer training as the holder of an A-trainer license. In 1998 he was one of the initiators and co-creators of the chess sport badge. In May 2009 he ran for the office of DSB President, but was defeated in the first ballot by the incumbent Robert von Weizsäcker . In the renewed candidacy in June 2011 he was able to prevail with 127 to 78 votes against Hans-Jürgen Weyer. After neither Bastian nor his opponent Ullrich Krause received an absolute majority in the first ballot in the election for DSB President on May 27, 2017 , Bastian did not run for the second ballot.

At the FIDE Congress in Tromsø in 2014, Bastian was elected one of the Vice-Presidents of the World Chess Federation. In December 2017, the German Olympic Sports Confederation awarded him the badge of honor.

Extraordinary

Bastian teaches physics and mathematics full-time at the Leonardo da Vinci community school in Riegelsberg and was an assistant for experimental physics at the University of Saarbrücken .
