Herbert A. Deutsch ( Herb Deutsch ; born February 9, 1932 in Baldwin / New York ) is an American composer.

Deutsch earned a bachelor's degree at Hofstra University (1956), where he worked as a professor from the early 1960s until his retirement in 2001, and a second bachelor's and master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music . He was a student of composition with Albert Tepper and Elie Siegmeister .

1963-64 he developed the first Moog synthesizer with Robert Moog . In 1965 he gave the first public concert with his New York Improvisation Quartet on a Moog synthesizer in New York's Town Hall , and in 1969 he gave the first concert with a synthesizer ensemble at the Museum of Modern Art as part of the Jazz in the Garden program .

From 1979 to 1983 he was director of marketing and sales at Moog Music . He also worked as a marketing consultant for Roland Corporation , Multivox Music , Norlin Industries , Passport Designs Software and Jim Henson's Muppets . In addition to numerous articles, he has written three books on electronic and computer music.

In 1972 he was one of the founding members of the Long Island Composers Alliance (LICA), of which he is president. The following year he organized the LICA's first Music By and For Students concert . Since 1994 he has been a member of the Music Technology Committee of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) and a juror on its Composition and Improvisation Committee . While teaching at Hofstra University, he founded a. a. the Jazz Ensemble , the Electronic Music Studios and The New Music Ensemble .

In 1995 Deutsch's multimedia opera Dorian (based on Oscar Wilde's novel Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray ) premiered at the Hofstra Opera Theater . His compositions were u. a. performed at the Music Educators National Conference , the Small Computers and the Arts Network, and the Society for Electroacoustic Music in the United States . His CD Woman in Darkness was released in 1999 and From Moog to Mac in 2007. The Meridian Quartet recorded their string quartet Preamble & Fugue for Capstone Records . Deutsch has received an ASCAP award more than a dozen times .
