Herbert Koelbel

Herbert Kölbel (born August 30, 1908 in Wulsdorf near Bremerhaven; † September 28, 1995 ) was a German chemist and professor at the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin).

biography

Kölbel studied chemistry at the University of Greifswald . He received his doctorate in 1936 as an academic student of Franz Fischer , where he did the experimental work at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Coal Research in Mülheim an der Ruhr, today's Max Planck Institute for Coal Research . Afterwards Kölbel was head of the research department and operations director (1943) at Rheinpreußen AG for mining and chemistry, Homberg. In 1953 Kölbel was appointed to the chair for technical chemistry at the TU Berlin. He was rector of the TU Berlin from 1961 to 1963. Kölbel was also a long-time member of the board of directors of DECHEMA , Frankfurt am Main.

The scientific achievements of Kölbel are wide-ranging (gasoline synthesis, synthesis of lubricating oils and fats, liquid phase synthesis, etc.). Together with his colleague Friedrich Engelhardt , whom he knew from his time at the Mülheim coal research institute, he developed the Kölbel-Engelhardt synthesis in 1951, a further development of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis . This process reduced the cost of manufacturing synthetic gasoline and marked a significant advance in the development of synthetic petroleum products.

In 1966 Kölbel was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

Wolf-Dieter Deckwer ( University of Oldenburg ), later Technical University of Braunschweig , was one of the most important academic students of Kölbel.

Kölbel was married to Christiane Kölbel, b. Uhlig; both had three children. His son Reinhard Kölbel was a professor of orthopedics at the University of Hamburg . His private interest was in classical music, especially playing the flute . He wrote a book on the history and technique of playing the flute and was director of the Moers Palace Concerts until 1953 .
