Herman Watzinger

Herman Watzinger (born April 20, 1916 in Wiesbaden , † 1986 in Peru) was a Norwegian engineer specializing in hydrology and thermodynamics .

Life

Watzinger was born as the son of the German mechanical engineer and university professor Adolf Watzinger (1879–1959) in Wiesbaden. Since his father worked in Norway at the Norwegian Technical University in Trondheim, he grew up in Norway. After graduating from school, Watzinger studied hydrology and thermodynamics at the Technical and Natural Sciences University of Norway in Trondheim. His subsequent doctorate at the university he had to break off because of the Second World War . After the end of the Second World War, he obtained a visa for a longer stay in the United States for a corresponding employment . In New York he met Thor Heyerdahl . He became known as a participant in the Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947. Watzinger's contacts with the Pentagon enabled the expedition to be supplied with provisions and equipment. On board the Kon-Tiki raft, Watzinger was the second in command and was responsible for the meteorological and hydrographic measurements. After the expedition he returned to Lima , Peru, where he worked, among other things, as a technical consultant and manager at the company WR Grace & Co og Atlas in the fishing industry. In 1952 he was awarded the Orden al Mérito por Servicios Distinguidos by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Watzinger was then the manager of a Norwegian fishmeal factory in Pisagua in northern Chile , which exported fishmeal to the USA and Europe. In 1970 he worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the Fisheries Department in Rome . From 1977 to 1979 he was Deputy Director General of the FAO. He then returned to Peru, where he died as a Norwegian citizen in 1986.
