Life

Count Hermann von Ortenburg came from the Carinthian count family von Ortenburg . The son of his brother Otto II was the later Gurk Bishop Ulrich von Ortenburg . Hermann von Ortenburg became archdeacon of Aquileia .

After the death of Bishop Roman II von Leibnitz , the Gurkers unlawfully elected Hermann von Ortenburg as their new bishop. The Archbishop of Salzburg Konrad III. deeply hurt, answered this brazen challenge with the appointment of Dietrich von Albeck , provost of Gurk. Hermann von Ortenburg took the Strasbourg fortress, but Konrad III. hurried to its siege. Hermann's followers were horribly devastated and on November 29, 1179 the siege was abandoned. Hermann von Ortenburg died in 1200, his final resting place is not known.
