Hidde Ploegh (2017)

Hidde Ploegh (* 1953 in the Netherlands ) is a Dutch immunologist .

Ploegh studied biology and chemistry at the University of Groningen and received his PhD from the University of Leiden , doing the dissertation work at Jack Strominger's laboratory at Harvard . For the dissertation he cloned the cDNA for an MHC antigen. He then headed a junior group leader at the Institute for Genetics at the University of Cologne under Klaus Rajewsky and from 1984 at the Dutch Cancer Research Institute in Amsterdam at the invitation of Piet Borst . In the same year he received the annual award of the Dutch Society for Biochemistry. From 1992 he was Professor of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and from 1997 Mallinckrodt Professor of Immunopathology at Harvard Medical School . In 2005 he returned to MIT, where he is Professor of Biology and a member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research .

He investigated synthesis and transport in the MHC system and the way in which bacteria and viruses manipulate antigen presentation via the MHC system, for example in the case of human cytomegalovirus and mouse cytomegalovirus M48 . He also studied the cell's proteasome system, which generates the antigens presented by the MHC on the cell surface, and the protein quality control in the cell ( ubiquitin system).

In 2000 he received the Avery Landsteiner Prize , in 2003 the Havinga Medal from the University of Leiden and in 2006 the Interbrew-Baillet Latour Health Prize .

He is a corresponding member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (1997) and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2000), EMBO (1986) and the National Academy of Sciences (2016).
